Default Nearly crashed cause of the snow this morning!!

God, I stayed over at my mate's and his street was caked with snow. I went slowly along to the end of the street and tried to turn, but the car just carried on forward......

I hit the bloody kerb and mounted it, thought I was going to smash into a fence but the car stopped. Luckily no damage but it was shocking how easily it happened.

I only drove in snow for the first time last night, and today I feel like I almost learnt a harsh lesson

I know most of you have loads more driving experience than me but just be careful all the same folks.

He's spun it a few times but thats about it.

We were doing a compression test on it, and un-beknown to us the coils don't like being cranked without having spark plugs connected! Bugger so we're pritty sure we have fucked the coil amplifier, however the amp is an integerall part of the motronic ECU.. New ECU time

bluesmoke, go to a disused car park and have some fun like we were last night. it also teaches yaself a little bit how to handle it on the slippery stuff.

Enough throttle and proper left foot brake control is needed with a high power FWD in the snow. Makes great fun taking the car through icy corners just a bit sideways with ~60mph

Of course proper studded tires help "a bit".

Driving on ice / snow is a learning curve

You soon learn you have no brakes or steering and the handbrake comes in useful for adjusting the necessary steering direction

Not all of us are lucky to be scandinavian... Don't really need snow for the left foot driving/drifting, just a brake bias controller and a fair bit of nerve!

You don't need studded tires for snow. Winter M&S stuff is required to make any sensible driving. UHP summer tires have just NO grip in snow, pretty pointless to try to drive when you'll be moiving around at 5mph.

Unfortunately here there is lots of snow but studded tires are banned even for emergency services.

By the way - I think the whole topic of this thead is wrong, because it's never the snow or the rain or anything like that that crashes the car, it's the driver who crashes the car.

Not when the driver turns and the car then carries on because of the snow

If the snow wasn't there, the car would have turned, hence it's the snow's fault. Simple

Strange logic, if you entered that corner too quickly on tarmac you would go as straight as on snow. You were just too quick. You have tires that do not grip at all in snow most probably and there you have to reduce you speed even more, that's all.

I may be not a track-day expert or expert in anything people off here know about but I am sure I did more kilometers in snow and ice then 99% people in UK

We would like to blame, others, road conditions, the car, and so on but after all it's drivers fault every time.

On snow with summer tire you're going to have no braking with ABS :-/

No it's ok, I get where you are coming from but what I am saying is at that speed in the dry I would have taken the corner fine, and so because of the snow I didn't

I was only doing about 7MPH tho. Was a weird experience. I remember as a kid waiting for the bus to school in the snow and this guy in a magenta Cossie came to stop at the junction at the bottom of this hill and as he went to stop he turned the wheels and the whole car just spun right round!

It is hard to understand that 7mph can be too fast :-( I know, even tough I didn't have to learn the hard way.

I did that last year when pulling off from a junctuin into main road and turning left. Well I almost span, but somehow managed to keep it going right direction after maybe 20-30 meters completly sideways, with rear hanging dangerously close to the verge of the road. Was just moe ice and less snow then I thought :-/
