Tiff - I was under the impression your computer doesn't have firewire ports hence the suggestion for a PCI card with them on.
I think people are confusing a situation that isn't that confusing - take for example your average USB printer, it will have a different connector than the USB connections used to plug into the PC end (typicall a USB B connector - the ones on the PC are USB A connectors I think), Firewire is even simpler so the device you plug into will have a connector that's smaller than the ones found on the PCI card (due to the fact that they will take up too much room on a small camcorder or iPod). The leads provided with the firewire card will be the ones needed to hook up cameras/mp3 players etc. to your PC. Buy one and you'll be fine!
If you've got a firewire port already on the back (might be labelled IEEE 1394 on the back of your PC) then all you'll need is the lead to connect it up, available from loads of places (I use www.cableuniverse.co.uk for most of my leads).
