We built this. We sweated over how it should look. We drove it hard and fast. And then we gave it away... such is the life of Max Power project cars.It was August 1993 when Grahame Steed, then editor of Max, hit the streets with a company chequebook, looking for a sound BMW 3-series that could be developed into Project XS. He found a low mileage, white 320i SE, checked it out and promptly brought it home. Before anything else was done, a Clifford alarm and immobiliser system was fitted. Then came the all-essential ICE, followed by Corbeau seats and Momo wheel and gearknob. Already it was looking better inside, but the outside was still stock - and that`s how it was when Project XS made its first public appearance at the London Motor Show. After the show, work started on turning the Beemer into the widest 3-series around. To do that, there was no choice but to opt for a Rieger conversion, which meant that much of the original bodywork had to be cut off. But how we laughed a few weeks later when we got out a tape measure. It was 6ft 4in wide! Rieger had recommended 15in diameter wheels, which even in 1994 were unfashionably small, so we opted for a set of 17in Compomotives; 9ins wide at the front, 11in at the back. That just left the paint. It couldn`t just be any old paint - Project XS had the honour of Max Power at stake, after all. The resultant purple to red fade-in chequer scheme just blew everyone`s mind. With paint like that, the motor had to be a bit special too. Griffin built up one of its 2.5-litre conversions, reckoned to chuck out 190bhp, and we were sorted.

what got me was a copy of max power.
It was either 93 or 94 I think
On the front was a really nice red corsa.. really took me when I looked at it and I spent all my pocket money on the mag that week.. about 3 quid I think.
Inside was a feature on a Cossie powered 4x4 van and the write up on it was cool and I just thought one day.
brings back memories- I'd stick a photo up but my dad moved the 500 odd car mags to the loft the other day.
GUTTED always find somet good to read on the bog
Max P was a good read once, and fast car and Revs...

How many of the project cars are still alive then. We know Thunder and MadMax died. Project 2000 is still alive as it was on E-Bay not so long ago. XS and Kicker, where are they now?
Yes m8, Dr Rocks on drake street in Rochdale

I used to see that Project Thunder car all the time, the editor of Max Power at the time lived in Oundle same as me.
Saw the RS Kicker around Peterborough quite afew times too.
I read MP from the 2nd issue, and for the first 3 or 4 years it was a VERY good and funny read, after that it went downhill rapildy

It was a very good mag in the beginning.
One issue I still have (possibly no.3 or 4) has a cossie powered 205, a shootout between the best RWD converted hot hatches, and a tech guide to CVH head porting.

According to the DVLA, Project XS is still on the road.
Thunder would've been a good car today, painted LC green, ditching the rear spoiler and some better wheels
