Default broadband and xmas lights

Well i have a problem, every time i turn on the xmas lights on the tree which is next to the computer desk it disconnects me , no lights no problem. I cant move the tree or the desk, been in touch with provider and they confirmed they do seem to have problems with static. I have tried puting gloves and boxes tin foil over the modem but nothing seems to work has anybodyany ideas, i hate sitting here looking at a dark tree
