I remember the old barrow boys!

I went to school at City of London at Blackfriars, so we used to run into the pit traders in their technicolour jackets in Burger King all the time!

What a difference it is now - I'm going up to town tomorrow to meet a mate who trades futures, and it's all open office floors and mutliple screens. I presume it's all much more regulated since they abolished the pits etc.......

Personally, i reckon that it seemed more interesting then, the pits looked like a proper rush, but seeing as the closest ive ever got is watching rogue trader, i do realise that my knowledge of that industry is as good as a traders knowledge of tuning engines would be after watch 2 fast 2 furious

Yep

Love the NYSE floor - have been round there with the traders & pricipals. My old firm had offices in New Jersey so was sent out there frequently

We were NASDAQ market makers But had great contacts on the floor.

Great partys in NY - miss it real tears

Has it improved things much though?

My mate was explaining that the more modern system and the advent of the internet has encouraged much more liquidity thanks to every man and his dog thinking they can day trade!

Simply can't believe the ups and downs these traders have!

To me reading a book then having a go is as wise an investment as someone reading the threads on here about engine building and then with utterly no prior experience buying all the bits for a 600bhp YB and bolting them together.

You just KNOW its going to end up with in tears, and poor

One of the good books I read recently Gareth:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/074...books&v=glance

Nice basic descriptions of loads of different investment types etc - very interesting, and quite difficult to understand, especially when the product being bought or sold only exists as a result of something else being traded.

I'm like you though - thirst for knowledge

I used to do some really risky trading a few years ago.

I was penniless after uni, and god knows why but lloyds bank stockbrokers gave me 5000 of credit.

But it had to be settled within 10 days of any trade.

I used to buy shares and sell them again with 6 days as this was their "netting off" deadline.

Sometimes used to make an average of about 100 quid a week, which was a significant second income to me at the time, but was fucking risky TBH cause i HAD to sell them within 6 days, wether they were down at the time or not, cause i didnt have to pay the money for the shares otherwise

Best profit was 427 quid in an afternoon on vodafone shares.

I think the term for what i was doing is something like "day trading"

ie normally i used to buy and sell on the same day.

Usual profit was about 50 quid on 5 grand (so only 1%) and i used to lose 25 quid of that in fees!

Only ever lost once, couple of hundred quid, at that point i decided to quit while i was ahead, but looking back i probably should have kept going as i was FAR managing to beat any amount of interest you get through a "normal" investment, especially as the 5 grand wasnt even mine in the first place

Anyway, from al this money you're gonna make on the markets, you should be able to afford a non-gay haircut!

From what I understand, day traders never leave positions open overnight.

Thats basically exactly what i was doing 99% of the time.

Basically at the time i noticed that for no reason that was obvious to me, mobile phone shares almost always seemed to close higher than they opened.

so i was buying low in the moring, then selling high mid afternoon.

As i say it was only about a 1% fluctuation normally, but that was enough to return .5% a day in "interest" on someone elses 5 grand.

I was mainly doing it cause it was fun though

Ps

My "feed" was some 20 minute old free ticker that was available on the web, so if anythign moved quickly, by the time i phoned my broker to confirm the price, i was already back on the way down after a peak or on the way up out of a trough, i reckon i could have doubled my profits if i wasnt basically doing the stockmarkey equivalent of doing a trackday by looking at the rear screen at the corner i had just been round instead of looking forward at the one i wanted to go round
