Speed Camera Debate...
Me and a mate have been arguing about forward facing cameras.
Can you be 'done' by one if you 'speed' through the trap? I thought the forward facing ones cannot flash you as this could dazzle you and crash.
Although my mate believes that you can be prosecuted by these forward facing cameras as you drive towards them.
Does anyone know the truth?
We're talking about Gatso cameras here, not Truvelo or SPECS.

Been flashed by two Truvello camera's in Luton. The flash was visible although not as intense as a n ordinary Gatso. Never heard anything on either account but that could be down to some joker pulling my front plate off

If it was a Gatso, you're safe
They aren't type-approved for oncoming traffic yet.
The way they work is as follows:
-An initial speed measurement is taken using RADAR.
-A set time later, two photos are taken (hence the 2 flashes). These pictures are a known time apart.
-From the distance travelled in the interval between the 2 pictures, your speed is calculated using the white markings on the road.
There's a good chance that the gatso would only get one picture of oncoming traffic (as you are travelling towards it, I reckon you'd be past the camera before the second picture was taken), so they wouldn't be able to measure your speed
Neil.

Got flashed TWICE last night by a camera on the other side of the road facing me. Usual trying to get home quicker trick and didnt see the camera on the other side of the road, always look out for the ones in the middle of the road (in the divders) and on my side of the road.
Shit me up when i suddenly saw a double flash.
Just reallt dont want the points or the aggro, i cant afford it as it is!

Thanks all.
Really gotta start paying more attention to these things.
Stupid thing was its a camera in the middle of no where (NOT AN ACCIDENT BLACKSPOT!) that is just there to make money

How often do you see them outside schools? A place where we should ALL be driving slowly?
When they put a camera in they often do it along with other road improvements and then claim the camera a success. Two of our current ones were put in and at the same time the limit dropped from national to 40.

What about the ones under the Newbridge roundabout?
They were put in when the M8 was rebuilt to go under the roundabout so there wasn't a chance for the new road to become an accident blackspot!
They also dropped the speedlimit to 50mph (so you can go faster on the A8 than you can on the new stretch of motorway).
I wrote to the Scottish Executive at the tima and - months later - got a reply telling me they were needed because of the "vertical alignment of the road". I guess that means it goes up/down hill!

Gatso's on the other side of the road you can set off driving towards them as you did....seeing other people go through them whilst it's set off is funny! i've seen it happen!
As mentioned it's the Truvelo's that can get you facing you, nothing to worry about
