put new ink cartridges into my canon printer a few weeks back (printer is fairley new).
now shes going all funny on me...

the top bit is meant to be blue, and the bottom is meant to be a darkish green.
every print comes out like this, every pattern + colour is exactly the same
any ideas why?

well, to me it looks like you need to check the black cartridge and make sure its not empty either.
Than do a head re-alignment
Finally if that dont work the head is screwed.
Again did you use canon ink or a refill, this is important because if you did and try getting it fixed under warrantee they will know and wont repair it.
I can explain why this happens technical bbut it is boring and long.
All i will say, is canon ink in optimised to a certain thinkness to ensure it flow through the head and the nozzles easily and helps in the cooling of the head. if you use the wrong ink,, the ink does not cool the head enough and the nozzles burn away. If you look at the ink you will see Canon ink is very clean as it is filterised but refill ink is not. This means if you do run this ink in your printer, particles of the ink will get caught in the nozzles blocking them up and making it easier for Canon to find out when you used the ink.
so, if non of the above work you need a new head. phone canon, and they may even swop out the whole printer. depends on the model. Usually takes 48hrs.
There is good refill ink out there but you have to go looking for it and not many people use it because of the cost.
Hope this helps
