Default External Storage Devices.......

Lads,

I'm slowly building up my mp3 colection to the point where my pc is getting slower

So i'm thinking on getting an external hard drive like this one...

Freecom MediaPlayer 3 80GB Silver DivX/MP4/MP3/JPEG/VCD
Media player centre 80gb hard disk installed + remote

Just looking for advice really, gotta be something thats going to allow further uploading..... How many Mp3's would 80GB hold??

Any and all advice would be great chaps...

just get another 40-60gb internal and spank it in there - cant see you filling that with mp3s!!!! if you reckon you will go bigger, 120 or sumthin.

80gb would hold roughly 16,000 mp3s!!!!

yeah you just want a normal internal hard drive exactly as you have linked

how many mp3s you likely to accomadate!? 120gb will hold 24,000 mp3s roughly! that should be more than enough!

save money on the size and go for one with a faster read time (in ms) and a bigger cache (in MB)

something like this one would be good 3rd one down

or

3rd down again

that will just sit inside your case as normal, all the necessary connections will be there and it will appear in My Computer as another hdd

btw. out of the one you posted and my second link - mine is slightly quicker and slightly cheaper - so you just need to shop around and try to beat that if you can be bothered!

the seagate barracuda's are pretty well respected i think, not that western digital etc aint

TBH mate, i'm gonna go with whatever you suggest

I know its crazy but hey, your the one who knows his stuff here!

BTW, what happens if the pc crashes (god forbid ) Will i lose everything?

I've got it in my head that all would be ok with an external.

absolutely no difference between an internal or external harddrive really.

an external harddrive is basically a hard drive (like in the links above) encased in a box to keep it dust free etc. with maybe a few extra toys such as cooling, flashy lights, remote control etc etc.

just looked at that one, your paying a lot for nothing really unless you will actually use the features?

if your pc crashes you wont lose a thing mate, you'll only lose data if your half way thru writing (and it crashes - therefore you might lose whatever you were saving/copying....unlikely as hell!) or the hdd corrupts (which is again HIGHLY unlikely lol - and remember internal/external are ultimately the same inside so both can fail the same)

Ok, you convinced me - Internal it is.

So in your opinion, what do you think would suit me best?

Now choose carefully as i will be buying it after you've choosen

Looking at the prices, i'd like to spend around £60 and have around a 160 - 200GB drive, but the best possible. If that makes any sence?

lol, what power

Seagate - £62.22 200Gb (8.5ms, 8mb)
WD - £65.74 200Gb (8.9ms, 8mb)
Samsung - £64.33 200Gb (8.9ms, 8mb)

Seagate wins in all departments

that might not be the cheapest place im not sure tbh - but overclockers always stock the best imo so you can always search elsewhere know you know which one to look for!

edit, might get it a bit cheaper here with p&p remember http://www.pricegrabber.co.uk/search...g_uk_b_s&skd=1

Will i need any of them cables they say you need?

And one last thing, what does this all mean? (8.5ms, 8mb)

The other 2 are 8.9, does that mean their better in some way?

Just so you're aware, you can get an external dual layer DVD writer now for £60 at pcworld (or internal one for abotu £40). The dual layer disks hold 8.5 Gb and cost a couple of quid. If you've got a lot of music might be a good idea to back it up anyway just in case of virus and stuff

no thats the seek time in milli-seconds - lower the better obviously

you shouldn't need any cables, most computers are already kitted out to put another hdd in. all you need is an IDE cable and a power cable.

power cable will deffo be in there and so should ide. if it isn't then i can send you one foc anyway if im wrong

btw. how many cd drives do you have? if you've got a few then you might have run out of IDE ports - unlikely though most have room for 4 devices (cd and harddrive - floppy disk not included)

- change a small jumper on the disk
- take back off pc
- use 4 screws to hold disk in place
- connect 2 cables

reboot, job's a good 'un!

good spec for the price - just not sure on medion.

had one many moons ago and it was a little unreliable, but that was a long time ago.
