Stu, I'd do it any time but im not very reliable at the moment. We have a big multi site project on at the moment so i will be working most weekends up to christmas.
However my advise.
Make sure the gasket set is genuine.
Get the head skimmed whatever.
Squeeze your lifters on rebuild or they will hold the valves open for hours.

Stu im trying to remember if you lock these engines up at the botton.
I would prefer to do one of these than a rs turbo head any day. Dont forget the only thing you will time up is the cams/crank rather than the ignition timing.
DONT LEAVE head off for weeks. These engines have "Wet liners" and liners can come away from the seals in the blcok if left for a long time.

I'm in the middle of doing a Rover 114 for my girlfriend -probably very similar apart from its the 8v not the 16v like yours not alot too it TBH - head was off in a couple of hours....one of the bastard headbolts had rusted on the outside of the engine which took most of the time so I'm going to replace em all to be on the safe side.
I've got the proper Rover service book here on CDROM if you need any diagrams etc when you put it back together then let me know & I'll send you them.

that means i have to take pullys off i have ne off and the other wont come off as it keeps spinning the cam and there is no way of locking it now its off engine.
Lee i never locked the bottom end up ie all the pistons are sitting half way up now is that a big problem
how long will ivor searle take to skim it

Erm locking the engine should not be a major problem. Did you mark it up though?
As Martin said You dont have to skim with cams out as the valves dont pertrude if open. Where as say a cvh one would.

If its anything like the 8v engines then apparently you are supposed to set the timing to 90deg BTDC before dismantling everything. Also its not advised that you move the bottom end whilst the head is off because you may push the wet liners out of their seats which would then mean you would need to replace the seals on them, also apparently its difficult to move the bottom end anyway due the design of the engine with the head off...or so the manual says!!

Rachel's dad had a HG go on his 214 within the first 5000 miles.
Asked for a Headgasket for a W plate Rover 214 and the guy in the parts place said "Sure sounds like a fair swap"
I'll get my coat

Hi, Newbie here, dont know if it's still the same, but when i did the rover heads + timing,i had to make sure the pistons were all in a line halfway down the bore and if you do that you will probably see the timing marks lined up anyway?
Did it the "so called normal way first" and could not crank, until my mech mate told me this!! hope it helps
