I had an E21 BMW 323i about 4 years ago - cost me £450 - used it for a year and sold all the bits for £350 - had BBS 13" wheels and front BBS and rear Fohn Spoilers.
Very entertaining little car in the wet - only 143 bhp - but you could see why they were banned in Sweden...
As I only used it in wet and salty weather, did less than 5000 miles and had it on a classic policy - £112 fully comp. Saved the Cossie from all the salt and ice.
You'd be lucky to find one cheap now but what about an E30 320i? They go for a few hundred quid round here.

S12 Silvias are ok, but std suspension setup is set of severe understeer, positive camber etc.
I bought a 200SX, stripped out, 1bar boost few other engine mods, welded diff, solid engine and beam bushes, coilovers, camber adj top mounts, the lot, its the BOLLOCKS, and i paid under 500quid.
Check link in my sig to projcts section thread.
The prices of S13s these days a S12 isnt such a bargain anymore.
S13s will be worth a fortune like AE86s are soon seeing as everyone is jumping on the drifting bandwagon, esp once Fast+Furious 3 comes out, which is all about drifting.
IMO get a volvo, 740 Turbos go for under 500quid and weigh suprisingly little, barely more than a cossie.
If not a 740 turbo, deffo a Volvo 340 1.7, strip it out, cut the springs, and weld the diff, they work really well
E30 BMWs do the job nicely too, shame they about 55 turns lock to lock, lol.
Whatever you do, seeing as you deffo want a drifter by sounds of this post, DEFFO 100% weld the diff solid (or get a decent 2way if you wanna spend money), the difference it makes to controlability cant be described, totally worlds away compared to an open diff or a standard Cossie/200SX/BMW LSD.
If you have both eyes poked out maybe
He said CHEAP, not 3500quid minimum

I didnt read the question properly did I.....
You could always drive in reverse,,,,,LOL
I would recommend a Carlton GSi 24v then as my choice of cheap RWD car for winter.
Loadsa spec, plenty of oomph and loadsa do-nut action.

any good?
any good?
The 1.7 Turbo from them and 440s and be fitted in the RWD 340s tho with a bit of fiddling (the engine bolts straight in, jus manifolds etc need a bit of fiddling.
Same can be said about the 1.4 Reno5Turbo engines, as they all the same family of engines.
340s weigh less than 1000kg when stripped out too

Have to agree with a BMW. Cheap, readily available and not such an upset if you wrap it up. Capri's are getting rarer now, good ones even more so.
Have to say I quite like the look of that 340 as well Somebody slap me

I bought a 940 last year for about £500.
Hardly small I know but no heavier than a Sierra or Capri I would have thought?
The B200T and B230T engines are strong and tunable. I bodged a K&N on and blocked off the mitsibushi turbo re-circ valve so it chattered. Had just got it running right and ready for a lot more boost when the Prelude came along cheap.
They are suprisingly good cars Volvos, one of the best all round cars I've owned.

You stand as much chance of getting a lotus sunbeam cheap as you do a rwd corolla lol unless its rotten as fuck
my choice would be either:
manta
200sx
bmw any tbh
also vauxhall senators are cheap now and they have the same engine as the carlton gsi.
Im loving the volvo though

The main problem with a Capri is they a bit shit really for the money, and you gotta have thick skin or no taste no not feel totally shown up being seen driving one

No they not anything but embaressing, not anymore, its a Capri, seriously.
Mk1+2 Escorts are cool in a retro way, but late Capris? Nah. Mk1s tho are.
A grand for one of them is crazy unless you WANT a Capri. If you just want a half decent RWD car for a grand theyd be miles down the list.
Benn- Well up in Scotland DavieT seems to think they have RWD ones, maybe they different
