Christian,

In no way knocking yours or gary's cars.

Both class in their own enviornments.

When I said 310 at the wheels ava, you know due to the larger rollers the chances are that is a higher wheels figure than would be stated at nobels. The losses are not transmission losses. But transmitted losses.

I am looking fwd to going out in DavidCH's rst soon as it mad 270 wheels and is a real 300 bhp rst. That will be something similar ish to yours, gonna be big step up from back when I had mine! class

I totally agree Lee and the Fun and Achievement are certainly there. It would just be nice to know how far these things can be pushed!

Was just thinking C&B,

your list of mods sounds in no way OTT compared to some of the setups out there. Just goes to show its about putting the package together and having some experience of gearing vs power curve

proper bo

if someone can explain to me how a 3-400 bhp car has a transmitted loss of around 50 bhp, but a 800 bhp car with basically the same transmission (possibly wider tyres) loses around 200 bhp, then i'll be happy to hear it.

Nick, they dont, its fucking bullshit

If they lost 200bhp thru tranny losses, which is heat really, the fucking tranny would glow white and melt in seconds surely...

Steve, glad they were impressed!!

I have strong opinions on this too.

In my experience, an RS Turbo loses 25-30bhp regardless of what power it is. That kind of makes sense, because whatever power the engine is, it is still using the same transmission configuration. Far bigger differences have been seen by running, for example, slick tyres. I have also seen the Power Losses decrease as the Gearbox Oil warms up.

Maybe I am misinformed, but I cannot see what would cause Power losses to increase from, say, 60-80bhp on a Standard Car to over 250bhp on a Tuned one. Lets not let this thread go off on a tangent though!!! LOL.

LOL. Do you know, thats one thing that I have never ever really thought about.

Actually , I lie. When Beccy and I first met 6 Years ago, she was going to buy me a Momo Millenium. Can't remember why that fell through, but haven't so much as thought about it since!!

Transmission losses go up roughly as a percentage of engine power. The reason for this is because our transmission loss is actually a loss of energy. This loss of energy is caused largely by friction which in turn turns the wasted energy into heat. (This is why your transmission gets hot)

The more power you have the higher the frictional losses as the loading is greater creating more friction in both the gearbox bearings and gearset.

In addition there are of course windage losses inside the box which remain fairly constant thus the final power loss through the transmission is not quite a fixed percentage of engine power, but that will do for most calculations.

Where a rolling road is completely inaccurate, is that when we measure the coast down losses this is constant no matter what the engine power. Hence adding this constant figure onto the wheels power is totally pointless as it in no way gives an accurate flywheel figure. At best it may tell you, you have a sticking caliper LOL!!!

Karl,

if heat is the reason for transmission loss....more heat more loss....and you hang some coolers on the gearbox/diffs....would the loss be much less...or am i wrong here...

...you'd be wrong there! The heat is still being generated, all you'd be doing is transferring the heat to the surrounding air.
