Matt, I've just got the EPSON R220. I have been very impressed. Cost £70. Don't know how much the cartridges are but I don't print that much.

Modern ink jet printers come in 3 diff catogries these days.

1st u have ur photo only printers, which print 4x6 shots. They are becoming cheaper to run, excellent quality, and quite fast. They are limited though to purely photos.

2nd is ur bog std inkjet which can be used for anything. Even for 30quid, u will get a printer which will do suprisingly good photos. It's not sold as a photo printer, but most people are impressed. Downside is that the very cheap lexmarks etc are expensive to run, and slow. Spend 80-100 on an Epson/Cannon/HP and u will get a very good all round printer, thats fairly reasonable to run.

3rd is your photo inkjet, with special inks that can print full size a4. These will have memory card readers, seperate ink cartridges - upto 8 of them - and usually a colour lcd screen. The photos u get out of these are incredible quality with the right paper. They are probably slightly dearer to run than the best printers in the 2nd catogry, and are usually a bit slower for printing plain black txt too. Pay between 100-250, depending on things like a screen etc.

If u want to use aftermarket cartridges - stick to wither Epson or Canon - by far the cheapest. A decent photo printer would be the epson r320 - in pcworld t mo for 129.

Rick.

300 is in the 3rd catogry. If it's 95% plain txt, and u only want one printer - then don't go for this.

I would go for a cannon ip2000, can be had for around 50quid, very cheap to run (genune cartridges are 8quid for a black 11 for colour), fast and will still do a good job for photos. Just doesnt have card readers and fancy screens etc.

yep you get the 6 catridges with it for £80, but £72 to replace them if you use proper ones.

Porkie - remember you saying it was crap before on a past printer thread, can only think you must have had a duff one, as my pictures print out and look no different to proper developed prints you get from the chemist?

yep definitely!!!
IP5000 or 6000, excelent allround printer, prints faultless photos and prints direct ont CD's
All seperate ink tanks, approx £6-7 for genuine cartridges which seem to last very well anyway

be careful with compatible colour cartidges if you are printing photo's.. the colours are generally not very good..
