Vehicle ID assistance...PLEASE...
OK... question to the wise....
A bare shelll exists that you suspect has had a prang in the past. Before purchasing it you ask the quesion if it has an ID.
The answer back is NO.
So... you ask if it has been previously written off - and if so what category of write off. You also ask the seller if an ID is sought whether a "Q" plate would be allocated. The answer back is that it would likely be a "Q" plate - but no further info is supplied with regard to the shells history. Likely it isnt known by the seller.
I guess I have several questions. Can a person check for a "write off" in the past based solely on the chasis number of the vehicle? Who would you call - DVLA?
If it has been written of, but now appears as if the work has been done to put it right.... would an application to get an ID automatically be awarded - or is there a chance that a certain type of write of would mean the shell is basically scrap - regardless of the work done????
When can you apply for an ID? Does it have to be built first... or can an ID be allocated to a bare shell?
Sorry for all the questions, but I am not in the UK at the moment to know the answers
Cheers for all your input

wouldnt it need to be sva'd if built from scratch with no current id ???
would try ringing the dvla if you have a chassis number they should be able to tell you the current state the chassis is registered to them as .
insurance companies would be able to tell you if its been written off i would have thought....

Legend
You can check the chassis number with Experian or HPi to see if it's on any condition alerts or been in an accident [thats been recorded somewhere], you don't need a reg number
I don't know about the other questions, sorry

Thanks for the input.
So what would the steps be if a person was going to purchase such a shell?
* Check with DVLA (or other) to see if chasis number has been written off.
* Take Shell to Testing station for ID
* Build Vehicle
* Obtain Registration
If anyone can confirm, that would help - as I really have no idea.
Also... what different sort of write of classifications are there?
Cheers
