Upgrading PC memory, which one do i need?
There so many and im useless when it comes to the components etc.
The PC currently has 512mb but i want to add another 512mb if possible, but how do i tell what kinda memory is in the PC at the moment?
The PC is a Compaq Presario SR1139UK Desktop PC if that helps?

just pop the ram stick out if it has 2 little notches where the gold connections are it is SD ram. if there is only one notch it is DDR ram. if its ddr check the speed of it and get some off ebay. sorted
Ive just pulled a 256MB card out of my old PC, that has 2 notches in the gold connectors so i presume thats an SD ram?
If its the same as the one in this PC can i just slot this one in and use it? bare in mind its out of another PC. Or is there a way i can find out whats in this PC without ripping it apart?

Be VERY careful with Compaq ...
It is one of the few PC's that are built using proprietory brand parts.
You need to look for exact matching memory.
The BIOS on these machines is special too .. and it even (usually) has a tiny Partition of its own on the Hard-drive .. and its own special version of the O.S.
You cant just stick stuff in Compaqs and expect it to work.
Cheers!

Andy - the more RAM the better I say. RAM is an abbreviation for Random Access Memory. RAM is the computer's main memory. The computer uses RAM constantly to temporarily store information while it is working with it. So the more RAM you have, the more stuff can be stored as the memory is bigger. While this won't really help a lot with web surfing (tho it does to an extent I belive with images and what not) but the main benefits will be with running programmes and multiple programmes/windows open at a time, and will show up a big improvement when it comes to gaming and things like ripping and burning CD's/DVD's...
I notice a pretty decent improvement with my 1.5gb of ram comparred to my other PC's 512mb - likewise the other PC to my old ones 256mb RAM....

Gracie - 3gb
Crikey
I was thinking of slotting in another 512 to bring mine up to 2gb tho
And also comtemplating whether to ditch the 80gb slave HDD (I have a 60gb primary in there) and fit a 120 or 160gb drive instead
