i was reading about this recently whilst looking who to use - i think the A in ADSL stands for asymetrical so you get a faster download speed than upload. that's fine for most users as that's what you do most of

SDSL is already here, it just costs a bloody fortune compared to ADSL! When MaxDSL (up to 8Mbps) starts to take effect, you'll see upload speeds of up to 784kbps (possibly 1Mbps, depending on provider), and then it's just a case of waiting for ADSL2+ to properly come into play (when BT get a move on), as then we'll start seeing more regular occurrences of a 24Mbps download speed...

yeah i meant more mainstream.

could always go LLU or not....

problem with adsl2+ is we cant sustain it over 90% of the network only places like milton keynes with pretty new tpon or all copper networks can carry it. london etc with paper and ali it jus wont hold it.

but there is stuff going on for a new network around the country and a lot more hi tech equipment going in the exchanges very soon

If it's BT organising that, I'm not going to hold my breath on it being in place before 2015!

Just tell BT to replace all their wires with wireless access, you can get 124mbps on those things

S'okay, I know rough details aswell, just kidding based on BT's past history of new technology rollouts!

For example, a few years back when ADSL was starting to become a "big thing", the UK was rated 46th (in a survey involving 47 countries) measuring ADSL rollout-speeds, managing to just beat Slovenia, I think it was...

When you look at the internet connection speeds of the likes of Japan (I know their population-base is pretty much squashed into a very small space, so providing fast internet connection is a lot easier & cheaper) and Sweden, both of whom I'm pretty sure have access to 100Mbps (each way) residential connections, it does make you wonder what BT have been up to all these years, and why we're only now branching into the likes of MaxDSL and LLU, for up to 24Mbps asymmetric (ie. fast download, slow upload) connections...

Think ADSL2 rollout to the whole country is a while off yet.
Most of BT's network was inherited from the old GPO which was paid for by the taxpayer before BT was privatised...
Can you imagine how much it would cost to rewire the WHOLE COUNTRY and how long it would take...
