Yes, if you have some way of holding the valve shut, compressed air for example.

Tool should be available from any good mechanical tool shop or auto factors. bolts to rocker studs then can be wound down to compress spring. make sure the piston is tdc on the chamber you are working on, this stops the valve dropping out

Yes, until you drop a Collet down an Oilway.

Its a fiddly time-consuming job. Well worth the £70 mentioned above IMO! It only takes to drop one Collet and its turns into a bit of a nightmare.

@ dropping the collet....I dropped one first time I did it on my 16i....luckily it went straight into the sump and we got it out with a magnetic telescopic 'reachy' thing that I dont know what it's called...lol....which was nice!

even if you did drop one it would be fine.. the amount of sumps ive found with these in and have been spot on. most important thing is not to drop a valve!

Do you really think your local ford dealer's YTS kid apprentice is any less likely to drop a collet than you are?

And if he does, do you REALLY thing he will tell anyone? :cry;

But to change Valve Stems Seals without dropping a valve is a piece of piss. You can be as careful as anything and still drop a Collet. Thats why its better to pay someone IMO, at least there is a chance that you may not have to sort it. Personally, I take precautions when changing these to reduce the chances of this happening.

check your local halfrauds tools reduced bin!! there were loads in my local one about a month ago-mustnt be much call for them now

I Paid £4 for my sykes CVH compressor tool. better quality than the burton type IMO.

shame it was a replacement for the one I lost (I paid full price of £13.99 a few years back )

yep very easy. Block the oilways with small rags incase you drop a collet! NOT TISSUES as mentioned above Tool available from halfords etc..kinda replaces the rocker and compresses the spring. Remove the plugs so you can check that whichever inlet and outlet you are working on the piston is at the top! The vlave wont drop with the piston at top...

When my FRST engine was rebuilt we found a collet in the block

Someone had obviously done it previously on the car and made a bit of a pigs ear of it
