Default D1 Drift Grand Prix - Silverstone - 56k? Kettle on!

Today was the first official Japanese D1 Grand Prix Event to be staged in the UK.

Japanese Drifting is just awesome to watch, they are crazy, but VERY talented. Also, they are great Sportsmen, playing to the crowd and supporting each other. Enjoy......

(Sorry that the pics were mostly taken from the same point!!!)

Basically, the cars go out in the morning on an individual basis to qualify. Then after lunch, the TSUISO is held, which is competitive Twin Drifting. Here, the cars go out in pairs and the aim is for the back car to mimic the front car whilst pressurising him into making a mistake. A panel of judges decide the winner from each 'Match'. A stepladder final then takes place.

The 2 cars in the last pic were the finalists. The Rear car is the 'Top Secret' Nissan Sylvia S15 and the Front car is a Subaru Impreza!! The S15 won overall.

Swear to god BEST car related thing ive ever been to by like a fooooookin MILLION miles

We had media passes and bibs so we was stood at the tyre wall on the 1st corner

The best cars were approx 3.5ft away from that wall, sideways, at 120+mph, fucking insane, esp in the final 16 shootout where as well as being 3.5ft from the wall they was 3.5ft from each other

NEVER see car control like that, and fuck me to they ever push each other into mistakes, proper hard competition to try make each other fuck up.
Twin drifting is scored out of 10 points shared between the 2 drivers, so could be 10-0, 6-5, 5-5, etc, and jesus do they ever go for it

Properly covered in bits of tyre by the end of it, as an example of how close I was, check out this pic Matt who was standing next to me took

The Irish guy Darren McNamara in the SR20 powered AE86 was a feckin legend, beating Fukuda in the Best16, overtaking him while twin drifting
IMO he beat Kazama in the next round too, but the judges gave it to Kazama .
Check out these couple of videos of his runs

For an example of how fast they going, I went out in Brett Castles S14a on the lunch break, he was noticably slower entering the corner than the Jap guys when viewing from the inside, but I watched the speedo when I was in the car and he was entering at over 100mph and even the second corner was 80-90mph
The D1 lot was doing 120-130mph into the 1st corner
