I have the same Problem Damo mine nearly failed the MOT because of slight movement on the steering rack mountings, so I changed them for new Ford ones and they were exactly the same
I have tried to find some uprated items but no such luck

I noticed you mentioned about a knock, i have had a slight knock and changed everything up front, do the steering rack mountings fail quite easily ??

If i turn the steering left and right i also get a dull knock as if the rack is buggered, but it was a recon from Graham Goode. I suppose that could be the bushes ??

The knck I get is either running or IGN off, sometimes when turning from left to right and back again it "knocks" then If I find the right place I can "Rock" the steering and it knocks back and forth, looking from below it would appear to be coming from the rack even though as you say its just been overhauled
