Went in June '03 to Playa Del Carmen. Stayed at Riu Tequila hotel, in the middle of a "village" full of huge top hotels. Fantastic place. Cost us £1200 each AI for 2 weeks, food excellent & drink included EVERYTHING, imported booze the lot. Beaches are beautiful, hotel had disco, entertainment etc, very good all round.
The town itself is a bit shabby, but thats just Mexico, very poor place.
Avoid the rainy season as it incredibly wet & stormy, late June till September IIRC, we caught the start of it and had a tropical storm for 3 days solid.
