sorry mate, missed this thread.
Thats the theory and partly why I bought mine over. Once you have paid shipping. import tax, cost of initial purchase, compliance over here, you are talking some fairly big dollars to recoup.
You "can" make a few quid but dont do as I did and lose a lot of money in doing it. A few years back there was some fairly easy money to be made but not really anymore.
The import regulations have also changed now and there is no longer the rule I bought mine in under which makes it a bit harder also.
TBH mate, I wouldnt bother unless you are looking at keeping it for a while for your own use and not worried if it doesnt get you back what it owes you.
The knowledge from the aussies revolves around the RS500 pedigree hence the saff's dont mean as much and look like some of their saloons anyway.
Compliance here is very strict as well as the car essentially has to meet the Australian year equivilant over here. i.e. you buy a 1986 car in the UK and import it to oz, it has to meet the 86 requirements the aussies had here which can be tricky with emissions.
It can be easier if you have owned the car for longer than 12 months in the UK so it can come under a personal import. This is so every man and his dog doesnt bring one in to try and make a quick buck.
Also, the car has to be completely standard to get through compliance, no modifications are allowed. It is also fairly heavily regulated what can go back on afterwards in accordance with the law.
My advice, dont do it unless money and time isnt an issue.
HTH mate
