Default Removing rusty drums...... *AND THEY ARE OFF*

Ive just been given an 1993 1.3 Escort for nout and have spent about £250 preparin it for MOT, the only thing ive got left to do is change the shoes in the rear brakes but i cant get the drums off to do so cause they are so bleedin rusty!

Ive tried banging them from all angles and even getting a claw hammer in behind them to lever em off but they havent moved at all!

Anyone got any tips for removing em?

I think there are 4 bolts at the back that you need to remove.
Have you done this?

Not sure about that?

Loads of WD40, leave it for a while, then big hammer time.

Also, have you wound the adjusters back in? That's prob not stopping you yet, but one the drum is free from the hub it might.

yes remove the four 17m bolts on the back that hold it to the hub! be careful not to break the rivets that support it other wise if they snap you will have to find the smallest nut and bolt to hold them back together! Its quite easy really! just dont undo the front hub bolt as they are a left handed thread and have to be replaced when removed!

yep thats right mate,i mean you can if all else fails but personally i wouldnt bother, and i know it might sound stupid but just be a little less vigourous when removing the drum and it should just come of with ease! Done this hundreds of times when working at kwik-fit for 6 yrs and all i ever did was brakes all day long as i was the only brake specialist at the time so as you can imagine i kind of got used to it!

Managed to get them off last night!! Just undone the 4No. 17mm bolts and with a bit of force they came off!! Rebuilt one side and got the assembly fixed to the back plate but cant get the front part to go back on!! Tried for about an hour last night to no avail so i left it!

Gonna try again tonite with more light and more time!! Certainly looks promising though!!

yes they can be a pain, but if you can have the patience to do it,it shouldnt be a problem! the thing about those is the the odd shape of the stub axle where you have to line it up so it goes in! Bit of a fag paper fit but youll do it!
