Any mouse has a connection at the back of the pc even a cordless one! all id say is try a mouse on your pc and if it dont work then try it on a mates pc or whatever and if it works then you know its the computer at fault

MOst USB mice work with Windos XP drivers, or Windows Compatible one's. A PS2 (not playstation) mouse should work regardless. If you have a PS2 mouse that does not work on your machine, or another, then you'll need a new motherboard.
If it's a USB mouse, and does not work on either USB port's on your machine, then it's either the mouse, the connection to the usb port, the surface the mouse is one (not kidding, my targus usb wireless mouse needs a white mouse mat for it to work properly), a driver issue with the usb ports (checking device manager will confirm this).
