205 gti - 1.9
Anyone had any experience with these?
I've currently been on the look out for a Fiesta (1.8 16v) but a few peeps have mention a 1.9 GTi.
It will only be used at the weekends when I deicede to go and explore some country lanes and been told the 205 would be more fun.
Any comments on handling/ease of maintaince would be great

Thing is though I know those zetec xr2i's very well.
Its a case of stick with what you know or try something new...
Thing is is a 205's handling really that much better than a 2i?

Suffer idle problems and headgaskets are known to go. Pretty simple engine tho.

BTW i have regular use of a 1.9, a 182 cliosport, focus RS and a 1.7 puma. The others are better cars but for a blast down some proper twisties id take the 205 everytime.

Had 2! A 1.6 and a 1.9, if anything the 1.6 handled better, wasn't trying to yank itself off the road as much as the 1.9. They do lift off oversteer all day round bends too, can make you nip a bit.
1.9 quite a bit quicker though, had a play with my mate in his S1 RST(this was 14 years ago! ) and my 1.9 absolutely pissed it, don't even think about comparing the handling of a FWD Ford with a 205. There is NO comparison. Pug everytime.
Downside is that they are made of paper and don't age very well. Check EVERYWHERE for rot, especially sills/rear quarter joints. Engines are simple enough if a little cramped to work on. And the interiors don't wear too well. If you get a half decent exhaust they sound sweet too.
Find a good one and you'll love it!

I think they are fantastic! Great fun, cheap, and go well!
I brought mine because it was a cheap car, turned out to be probably the most fun i've had out of a car
They are fragile though, bits break on them, and you get the odd electrical gremlin, but to be fair the newest 205 Gti you'll be able to find will be about 11 years old now so not uncommon with any old car. but they don't suffer with the rot bug really, not compared with Ford's as someone thought to galvenise them!!
106XSis with a Gti engine coversion are well worth a look as well, they handle brilliantly, probably better, are cheap to buy (unlike a 106GTi) and are newer so less crusty all round. My mate has recently done a 14.9 with his standard engine'd 1.6 16v XSi with the gti engine. Made 150bhp at Jamsport as well, with some mapping!!

Mate is on his 4th one now!
they are Good out the box (especially the 1900s)
Lift off oversteer is a killer on them cos they so short!!
Watch out for electrical probelms on them (terrible for it)
Also, Rear beam bushes let go and the wheels tend to sit at funny angles
when that happens.
when they are right, they are pretty solid (if a bit rattely)
little cars!
the one me and my mate have done is a bit different now though
202bhp goes nice now for his track car!

Do it!! It will make you look like this
as soon as i fix and sell my little 106xs runaround - I'll be looking for another 205 GTi
As for reliability - I had a 1.6 for 5 years and it was faultless (although it was only 3 years old when I got it).
I replaced it with a 16v Golf that broke down EVERY bloody time I drove the piece of shit.

Fantastic cars.
We've had 7 between us over the past few years, and I personally ran a 1.9 as my everyday car for three years with almost faultless reliability.
Very easy to service and care for - the only issues are rear torsion bars that have seized if the car's been sat.
I've never paid more than Ł500 for one, and we've had everything from 1 owner 30k cars, to hige mileage smokers.
Pic of my brother's one in action

I'd go a bit more expensive and a 1.9 rather than that one mate. Get one at around 1 - 1.5K that is in clean condition. Love the Miami blue and the odd light greenn colour ones.
Top cars, nothing comes close to them

Mega mega grip (ie 85mph+ showing while circling roundabout) and then push it so hard front end loses grip, let off a bit and back end comes round too, 4wheel drift and filthy/shocked looks from other motorists
Love it

I would get one over a Fiesta, as you won't have to worry about rust for a start!
But it's not all gravy with them, mechnically to work on, they are fiddly, and awkward compared with anything uncle henry has made. And like people have said the electronics on them can be a nightmare, they are complex, mine had a judder under load for about six months until I tracked it down to the airflow meter......Personally I think they are quite fragile, and that includes the engine.....
But over all, they well worth the hassle, because they reward you with a lot of cheap laughs for the money! and they truely are great cars, so you end up letting them off the hook when they let you down e.g. like when the central locking packs up 2 days after fixing it
