if it is a Kreg it would have come with a cat

so now the machine does a print out which is required by the new MOT system

if you dont have a cat you can get away with it.

the only way is a dodgy MOT, make it legal, or prove the engine in the car came from a car without a cat. thus not needing a Cat certificate.

some MOT testers will turn a blind eye to hydraulic handbrakes and the same for the cat provided it passes the emisions but i got told a few days ago when i rang somewhere for a stainless exhaust system that a new law is comming out where if ur car is registered after (cant remember the exact date) in 1992 then if ur stopped on the road and checked and the police find that u don't have the cat fitted it's an instant £800 fine on the spot!!

grp N you mean phil? big different between the 2 classes

they do one of 2 things, either fit mechinical handbrake callipers, like marco.

Or they tied a peice of wire through the brake pads and around the handbrake.

regards cats im unsure, due to them being rally cars i think there on q's so not sure about what that does to the cat tests ? i.e viods it

Contrary to popular myth there is no law that dictates a catalytic converter must be fitted to a car. The problems arise as after a set date cars had to comply with much much tighter emmisions regulations (keeps the tree huggers happy). Without a catalytic converter you have a very minimal chance of achieving those minimal emmisions regs. So if you were stopped with no cat you would not be fined for not having the cat you would be fined for failing an on the spot emmsiions test.

Haven't a clue on the handbrake thing though

well according to Topgear in aylesbury there will be a law by the end of this year that does mean u must have it which is why they have stopped making full systems with decat pipes in to allow the change, all they'll make now is cat back systems to cover their arses

If they introduce it (which I'd be surprised at) it would only apply to cars registered after the date of enforcement. Same as they did with black number plates. Law came in and it was only applicable from that date hence why cars before 197? can still have them and not the yellow and white plates everybody knows today

You can buy a sports cat and fit seperate mechanical handbrake calipers (available from AP, Wildwood etc)

Fitting a pre-92 engine (with proof) would get around the emissions problem wouldn't it ?

Yes!

Hyd hand brakes are a no-no after '67. You should for your own safety have a seperate handbrake system - it should be regarded as an Emergency brake rather than a parking brake IMHO

if your car is a 1994 then you need a cat 93 dont so dont worry about that
i know i own an mot station ther are 2 catorgories up to 94 94on
as for the handbrake it is elegal but if you took it to an ordernary garage they whould not now the difference due to the m only testing brake forces and play in lever which whouldent fail due to hydralic handbrakes working better than ordinary cable ones
there is a new car on the market a citreon mpv not sure of model but that has a hydralic handbrake and that passed i tested it
thanks jc

The number of cars I have seen roll off overnight in parc ferme with just a hydraulic system is unreal. It usually ends up in damege to at least 2 cars.

We have fitted 2 calipers on one car to pass MOT rules and also keep the scruitineers happy (as they do have a purge on this every so often). It was done simply with a double bracket and two handbrakes. The first one being the hydraulic AP's with the handle placed vertical up by the dash, and the second mechanical VW Golf calipers with the handle in the normal position.

Cat is put back on for the MOT and removed after usually

http://www.motuk.co.uk/exhaust_emmissions.htm

Looking at that it seems between 92-94 if the tester hasnt got a chart with the car in his book NON cat test....now surely my Escort wont have that as it aint strictly a escort cosworth production car????

Problem solved yes?

theres is so much confusion on this cat job, if its post 1992 then its a cat test, yes there is a guide for compliant cars which gets ammended every year, 99% of cars are in here,

as for wondering how your car got on when it was new phil, youve answered your own question, how many group a/wrc cars do you see run by works teams over 3 years old ? hence no ned for mot, and not only that most counties that the wrc are in dont even have mot type laws like this shitty country

the rest has been explained - if your mr law abiding citizen, its a set of mech h-brake calipers and a sports cat - end of chat !
