Default This Months EVO Magazine - Focus RS vs Astra VXR, Golf GTi

........and the original Focus RS wins They take back all they said about the twitchy handling and torque steer and said it would be likely to have won the group test out of the VXR, Golf GTi etc if it was a new car!

Glowing report of the final pre production Focus ST too

The king is dead......long live the king

Theres a lot riding on this ST, if they sell enough the RS is a possibility

It did kind of vindicate the Focus RS, but it's not too much of a surprise to find press cars driving differently to the production versions.

I love EVO and read it religiously, but I did wonder why ALL the car mags were making such a fuss of the diff issue.

I'd love to have seen what would have been made of the car with a standard Ford FWD LSD

My mate brought an issue round from a couple of month ago with an article about drivers cars for 20k...or summit along those lines.

Had a Jewel Violet Monte in the test, and they slated its interior for a possible 20k car.

What the fuck is that about?

And in the back of the mag where they list loads of car and give them star ratings. They make a comment abouts it image rather than how the car actually drives...

Do they just have a chip on their shoulder about Escort Cosworths or summit?

The thing with most of the car mags is that they are a useful "guide" to what cars you MIGHT like or are good. As everyone finds different things appealing about cars they are never going to get an opinion spot on for everyone. I thought it was only Evo ( who have now changed tack ) and Top Gear that didn't like the RS Focus handling particularly. Autocar seemed to like it.
The new Astra VXR for example, Clarkson didn't rate it much and did the "hands off, accelerate hard, look at the torque steer, that's terrible" on the TV. Shame he didn't do exactly the same in the new Golf GTi on telly. I've tried it and it does much the same actually. Try it in a Focus RS and I suspect you might get the same effect? ( I don't know, I'm just guessing as it's a powerful fwd car ).
Autocar however liked the Astra VXR a lot. Who can you believe? My opinion is that you have to drive the car for yourself to decide and only use the mags as a guide or a bit of fun reading.

I've had a 309 GTi and an Astra GTE 16v in the past. The Peugeot was a sweeter handling car no doubt but I had far more FUN in the Astra to be honest but some of the car mags at the time seemed to reckon the Astra was almost the worst handling hot hatch ever ( except Autocar......and John Simister from Performance Car who has a Pug 205Gti ). John Barker from Performance Car didn't like the Astra much at all though so it all comes down to the old "chacun a son gout" I reckon.

The thing they do say though, is that they suspect the FRSs supplied at launch may have had their power output increased slightly which may have introduced this problem

Exactly! Like those Skoda Octavia press cars that were soooooooo obviously running LOADS more boost than standard! when tested they were doing outrageous times... the real road ones were over 1.5 slower to 60!

Yes of course I have, what do you find wrong with it? Think its a nice interior...nothing worse than a Impreza or Evo.

LOL - all I'm saying is that it's a Ford interior.

It's not exactly classy, in comparison to the other cars on test in that mag.........

Jase - my interior is two bucket seats, a cage, and more gauges than the Starship enterprise - probably more classy than yours
