It does emphasise that you should consider any car as Phil says, its about getting it right, not hanging the arse out on every corner. And making sure its cheap because theres lots of other drivers out there who wont pay if they ram you by accident.

So thats one reason not to spend loads on a track car.

If your a good enough driver you would have the skill to avoid this happening before it does Rich.
If someone rams you from behind then you are the one that was braking too early lol. You should have seen it coming and got out of its way
Its the people in their BMW's (just using that as an example ) who look in their mirror and say "huh its only a Pug, and it ain't passing me"

If someone rams from behind then chances are they've outbraked themselves Which as you know is the cause of most accidents on track.
But you are right that some people do think "its only a RS1600i (example ) and think its driven by someone who feels out of breath at 60mph so they'll never pass me in my shiny Ferrari"
When the guy (Dave?) wrote off his Escos at Coombe thats when I realsied its not worth taking something expensive out there. As it can happen to anybody.

re: side impacts.
Ive managed to brake for the corner and turn in. Whereas Monkey boy in his Rover engined car, has decided hes going to brake later and go underneath me. So he T-bones me.
I still think 90% of incidents on a track (race or road cars) are down to people getting all enthusiastc and thinking they're some kind of late braking demon and punting the person in front.
I blame the parents myself

Are you a parent
Monkey boy would be left footing it round the corner keeping the car in perfect balance whilst laughing and waiting for arse end out charlie to straighten his boat up
90% of incidents on trackdays are through bad observation or positioning And if you attended them as much as I do you would know there is NO overtaking allowed on corners for that very reason

get an S13, good strong engines, you can see 350bhp on standard internals, rev nice (7,200rpm limit) cheap to get most parts for, quite light, handle very nicely at higher speeds although they are a bit understeery in tight corners as standard. lots of aftermarket parts for them (especially suspension wise as they are often drifted), can get very cheap stuff from America.
i bought a 4-1 stainless steel manifold and HKS style divorced turbo elbow brand new for £130 delivered from America. i fitted uprated brakes on mine and they are really good and were cheap too. £60 for the callipers off a j-spec 300ZX TT, £105 for the Feredo (sp) DS2500 pads, £40 for a set of braided hoses, and about £100 for the BMW M3 315mm Brembo disc's (re-drilled to suit) and brackets and bolts to fit them. its a very good set-up for pocket money prices.
the best thing about them is if you were to bin the car on track you'd be able to re-shell it for fuck all. i got my new shell for free as the guy needed the space. it came with everything but an engine and gearbox and even had KYB shocks, power boost valve, drilled and grooved front disc's fancy boot spoiler and a few other good bits on it.
i think an S13 is an ideal starter track car. it can be adapted all the time too, they have as much tuning potential as pretty much anything out there. there are 2 600bhp S13's in the UK and you can still go further too.

sorry i means what matt said...
just look at pon a s agood example... sellings up and getting something cheap as chips. also all the cossie owenrs who have cheap cars as track day toys
the maintenance costs of a cossie are astronomical for a cheap track day toy!
oh, and theyre hardly blessed with awesome handling out of the box are they

Not as expensive as you think Jim and every car will need bits changed over no matter what you buy.
As for the handling your right, but a set of Konis and some polybushes make it not too bad. Also some cheap s/hand slicks make a big difference My new car has billie coilovers all round and weighs next to nothing so should be good

How about an XR2, stripped and caged up with a 2.0L zetec with webbers or something would be rapid.
Steve B's RS1800 was certainly doing the business alongside some high spec Cosworth's at Silverstone! Unfortunately my RS1800 wasn't showing up quite so good, I blame the driver! With a late RS1800 you get added safety features too like airbags and side impact bars, worth considering especially as you have a wife and a youngster too.

M7 COS,
IIRC Tiffs (Why is that your usernname I thought you were called Mark? ) got a Pimp My Ride Range Rover as well. So Airbags arent high on the list of priorities.
My opinion is that anything up to 2 Litre NA will be fine. If you want to hang the arse out on every corner go RWD, but if you are more of a racer and get the satisfaction from demolishing bigger, faster, more expensive stuff then go FWD.

XR2i with a few choice tweeks. People used to take the piss out of our old white one. Everybody who actually went in it loved it though Cracking fun, cheap to buy/repair and capable of upsetting far more powerfull cars
Pug 205 has got to be an option as well as they handle so sweetly

You knows that....
I would have 100% gone the 2.0 16v Nova route if I hadn't have had to have a RS being chairman of the Bedfordshire RSOC Grp
