castrol SRF, only dot 4, but go compare the dry and more crucially wet boiling points of it,

not cheap, retail is £40 a litre and you need 2 litres to doa cossie brake setup,

ps, do you want to pm me about how secs got on?

the DOT rating is not really any help!!

Go for SRF or Millers Racing Brake Fluid 300 Plus

Cheaper stuff like Motul is ok, but not as good as above!

Would go with Motul RBF600 and compared to liquid gold (Castrol SRF) its price is affordable.

I used a decent 5.1 changed regularly in my cossie on track days without a single problem.

For a track car, I'd run SRF as I do now, but for a road car, a decent 5.1 would be absolutely fine.

Alex didn't say DOT doesn't matter - it does, but it relates to a test that the fluid must meet to obtain minimum boiling points (wet and dry).

The DOT rating is important in so far as you shouldn't mix certain types with each other e.g. DOT 5 (silicone based) must not be mixed with other fluids (DOT 3 or 4 for example) and silicone based fluid can damage brake components if they weren't designed for it (seals mainly).

DOT 3&4 are hygroscopic (absorbs moisture) whereas DOT 5 isn't. It's the absorbed water boiling that can cause problems, but this shouldn't be a problem on a well maintained vehicle.

DOT 5.1 is synthetic (Glycol Ether Ester), but not silicone based and so not compatible with DOT 5.

Castrol SRF, I personally wouldn't use ANYTHING else. £35 a litre (see my website).

I've tried loads of DOT 5.1s (the all the AP stuff) and boiled the lot of it, switched to Castrol SRF and NEVER had a problem .

dont risk the synthetic fluids there shite , you need brake fluid to be hydroscopic for a reason trust me , ive described/discussed this many tims, i personally use ATE BLUE, but i believe the best on the market now to be srf - would NEVER use 5.1 fluids ever

Why do you want BF to be hydroscopic?

Rich_w,
Why do you want BF to be hydroscopic?

well the truth is you dont, but if its not then moisture will not be absorbed into the particular hydraulic fluid but will stay in the lines as moisture, then forming water/vapour lock in the lines then you will press the brake and will have a massive water bubble in the lines and as you cant compress it it will boil off when reaching 100deg then you will loose the brake pedal completely, with the likes of dot4 all it needs is changing regularly, when it absorbes the moisture the result is only a lower boiling point butyou will still have a pedal and will still work once cooled hence the reason not to use dot 5.1

I was wondering when/if someone would bring up the 'positive' (comparitively speaking!) aspects of hygroscopic BF

Surely Bill was in fact correct, as Hygroscopic refers to the absorbtion of moisture.

Twice in one day Mike?

You're losing your abilities with the approach of old age and senility!

By the way, did I tell you about the sexual encounter I had the other day?

i knew all along it was in fact hygroscopic but when we approach subjects like this its easier to term it with hydro as most people will make the link to water

whereas if i had have stated hygro this topic would have been long dead

I understand that Mark, and did indeed suspect that is why you used that term, but hey, just call me pedantic

Replied to your other thread quite late last night btw - hope it helps.
