Windows Media Player you can get round easily, Open Media Player 9 and then click on help, then check for player updates. You can do it from Microsoft, and simply say, no do not check the validation.

However, the latest windows update which say's

Get the latest Windows Update software.

We've made improvements to our website. To download the new version of the software and begin using Windows Update, please click Install Now.

this will actually check your CD-Key against all of the known "patched" key's available to microsoft.

The Sp1 and 2 workarounds still work as far as I know, but this latest one will not install.

Now, with regards to people doing a fresh install, then running Windows Update, I do not know yet if this new update get's installed with / after Service Pack 2

Rumor has it you can have issues with a genuine copy that's been cloned, but I aren't 100% sure on that. Someone has shown me some small print on the Microsoft site which suggests it's true though.

is this the:

"Windows update will now valiadte your copy of XP?" etc etc before doing updates?

If so I have a, according to microsoft, "Totally legal copy".

Cant argue with that!

they don't do much, just advise you to go and see your "retailer"

Bit pissed off TBH, my mate installed Windows XP Pro on here after he formatted it for me and update won't have it

Not his fault though

Looks like I might have to do another fresh install with XP home and use the key on my PC casing

Mine had Windows installed on a partitioned sector of the HD and I didn't get a copy of it with the PC when I bought it, so when it got wiped I didn't have it to load back on there, I'm not paying for it again

You do realise that you never paid for it in the first place. If you have a valid product key which would have been stuck on your pc or provided to you by the buillder microsoft will provide you with a replacement xp discs for £5 iirc.
