No it isnt an M3 or CSL but thank the flockin lord i aint got a rattling, squeaky, rottin, unreliable, annoying, silly RST anymore.
I know when i go to my car and turn the key it will start pretty much 99.5% of the time, the heaters work all the time, the exhaust dont knock on the gear selector and the sunroof dont cover me in rust everytime i want it open cos its hot....

Aspired to cossie ownership for about 15 years and eventually got there. Always liked the IS200 Lexus so we now have one of those. Now looking at a car to replace the g/f's subaru so will probably get a Skyline R33.
G/f really wants a new mini so maybe in a year or so when the price has dropped a bit, she can get one of those. I wouldnt mind an EVO 6 in silver but suddenly when you can get most performance cars, the novelty seems to be wearing off (kind of like drinking under age! )

Testing the future
very good thread rich
in my case, i see my car as a hobby, not a means of transport. my cossie is and always will be a second (or third, or forth...) car, purely as a hobby, so it doesn't matter to me what i spend on it, as long as i enjoy it.
and i have no aspirations to own a 'better' car. just a better bike (want to replace my vtr1000 with a super blackbird)

There are a few cars I would like to own, but the way I look at it at the moment, is that if I spend a few hundred quid here and there on a cossie, putting that money in a kitty box won't buy me anything for years.
If I spent 5K on a new engine, I am putting 5K in a known quantity, if I bought another performance car for 5K + whatever I sell mine for, I might have to spend £££'s fixing it, so I'd rather stick with my known quantity.
Spending 5K on an engine would be a long term decision, based on the fact that I want to keep the car for while longer and definitely not to recover any of the costs.
Having said all that, here's my experience of buying two high performance cars...
BMW850Csi and TVR Chimaera, both cost around £30K to buy and sold two years later for £14K and £17K respectively.
When they were both sold, I had to pay left overs on finance so had almost nothing left in my pocket.
Total spend over four years to OWN the cars, never mind servicing and insurance - £29K.
I've bought a cossie for £11K seven years ago, even if I added up all the bills, etc... I prob wouldn't come to 29K
I kinda wish I'd spent the money on the cossie, cos I still have it, whereas the other two are just distant memories...

know that ignores the loyalty to a particular marque, but I just think that's being blinkered
Loads of trackdays, CHEAP cars and even cheaper grey imports lots and lots of tuners and a really good modified car scene (im not talking max poo scene)
Thing is that I would love to sell my S2 for 3k and then go buy a Scooby.. but the thing is that here a 1999 Scooby WRX is just over 20k used.
Just look at these used car prices..
05 STI costs 60k
95 E36 m3 30k
88 E30 m3 14k
90 4x4 Saph 10k+ for a good one, cheapest molested ones go for 7k
94 Escort Cos 18k for a standard one
04 Evo VIII 42k
90 Nissan 200sx 6k
97 Porsche Boxter 40k
95 Audi 1,6 with 180k on the clock is 6,5k
99 Golf gti 1,8T with 85k on the clock 18k
So with these car prices I can't really see what kinda car I should change to that would be just as fun. Only thing as cheap as the rst's are golf 2 gti's old Toyota corolla's and I don't want that.
So think of yourself as lucky that you have the choice of so many great cars at such small prices.

I had a chat with a financial advisor a few years back and he advised me that I should only drive a car thats worth a third of my salary. My first Cossie cost me £11k and I was only earning £20k then, but what else could I get at the time with that sort of performance for that sort of money. The cost of the mods were reasonable for what you get for it....more bang for your bucks...

good to hear the other side of the story, cos all we hear and read in the papers here is how expensive everything is in the UK compared to the rest of europe

Depends how you quantify "Better",cos unless i spent about £70k upwards i aint gonna find anything better than the taxi......
I regularly drive a Cayenne,E46 M3,Gt3 and Gt3rs.......the Cayenne is a boat, the M3 is dog slow, and the only thing that really does it for me(Gt3)is about £70ks worth.....so better it may be but my cossie is as quick, has four doors,a big boot, and at about 6 grands worth it`s not exactly a lot of money to be worrying about all the time...
So...................Better...................I think i would be hard pushed to find anything better...
Would buy a Lambo if i won the lotto though.....

So why do you quanitfy better as being faster in a straight line?
The M3 would anhialate your car on the back roads/track, and let's face it - it's not a slow car. Your saff is just fast.

Take your point about the handling mate, but unless your doin loads of track action its all academic cos you cant drive like a twat on the roads anyway(cameras, dibble, social responsibility etc),so i suppose for me its just the value thing, knowing that the sapph at 6 grand is every bit as good as cars costing much more.............
I must just be a mingebag..

LOL
I also take your point about them being hugely fast for the money, but compared to an E46 M3, driving a saff is the automotive equivalent of shagging the fit bird's mate who happens to be a dirty fat slag

To answer your question. The next car I DREAM of getting is currently going for £45or so. I dont expect to be able to afford it in the next 10 years. So its not a case of aspiring. I've GOT a 1980s BMW and unless circumstances change thats what I'll have for a few years yet. If I can make subtle improvements to the car for my personal enjoyment. Then I will. But Im not about to spend even 10K on those mods.

Hmmm wouldnt mind one myself, but will wait for the V8 TDI to come down a bit in price, which should just be in time i finish uni
