Blast rips car apart Jun 21 2005
By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner
A CAR was blown to pieces when an engine fire reached its specialist power-boosting system.
The driver was so anxious to flee his stricken vehicle on the M62 he left his trainers behind as he scrambled up the banking.
The drama began when the souped-up Toyota MR2 sports car was being driven on the eastbound carriageway of the M62 near to Stott Hall Farm, Scammonden, at 9.30 last night.
The engine developed a fault and the driver spotted smoke pouring from it.
He knew he had a cylinder of nitrous oxide linked to the carburettor to give the car even more thrust.
He also knew it was likely to blow up once the car caught fire.
He escaped with his companion and fled up the banking as fire swept through the Toyota.
The vehicle exploded with an huge bang, hurling debris across the carriageway.
Watch manager Rodger Binns, of Elland fire station, said: "It was just lucky both people got out the car and well clear of it.
"If they had still been inside when the cylinder exploded, they could well have been killed.
"The cylinder is slightly smaller than ones used by divers, but it had gone with such a bang it was peeled like a banana."

There's a story similar to this on the Internet about a car exploding whilst parked up in a garage in America, the force of the blast ripped the car in half & blew the garage door apart too!

nothin to do with the contents,if a pressurised gas cylinder gets sufficiently hot itll blow up,BIG time, regardless of the contents, even nitrogen would blow up!and yes,itd rip a car to shreds if big enough.

It can indeed happen, fire extinguishers (co2 ones) can do the same thing.
If you have a wizards of nos kit though instead of an american make one then its impossible as the bottles have a safety device to release the contents before they get hot enough to burst the bottle.

Here's a fun time science experiment............
Go buy a can of that compressed air for electronics work.
Chuck it on a fire. Stand 2 feet away and watch to see what happens...............
acutally, don't do that.............

one dead maxima.
Safety valve on the bottle didn't work so the pressure of the cylinder blew it appart.
Any compressed gas cylinder will have the same effect.
