Default Can you use your oil pressure gauge...

to determine if the oil has reached its correct operating temperature ?

I don't have an oil temp gauge in the 2wd and the fact that the water is up to temperature is not really an indication that the engine is warm.

I have noticed however that the oil pressure drops slowly from approx 60psi to 50psi as the car warms up, would that be a fair indication that the oil has warmed up enough ?

Just wondering really

dunno really wouldnt have said so but going by my gauge it takes ~15 mins of driving to get to operating temp. so I go by that in my other motor with no gauge, so if your oil pressure drops at around that time then i guess the answer is yes

You can always get an oil temp gauge, you have to buy a new sump plug that has the fitting in it for the temp sender.

That way you will know for deffo

In a rough way. Yes. Like you say the oil gets thinner as it gets hot. But to be absolutely sure a decent gauge is the answer.

You'd be amazed how many people think that becasue the water is at temp. The oil must be too...

My oil always reached a steady pressure (i.e. it's hot pressure) before the water was up to temp!

I tend to use my pressure guage as a guide. If it's above 30psi it gets driven gently sub 30 and it's about ready to be spanked.

I agree 100% with the comment about the water temp guage

As above really......after a good run note the idle oil pressure...then on next thrash wait till it drops to that!

u can yes. U dont want to be thrashing anything until it hits 160F, and that takes a lot longer than the water

It's amazing how many people dont realise the oil pressure drops as the oil heats up

Thanks guys, I know water temp isn't enough, and yes, ideally an oil temp gauge should find its way in the car, but there's already 5 in there (water, volts, oil pressure, afr and boost), I guess volts could go and be replaced with oil temp.

I don't get that bit at all... And Oranoco, surely, low oil pressure isn't good is it, why do you say the car gets a spanking when the pressure is low...

ooohhh, I've opened a whole new world of confusion for myself now...

Greg I think Phil means the same as me.....once you know for a fact that the engine oil is up to temp. ie. after 15mins driving note the oil pressure.

then next time you go out once the oil pressure reaches that level you should be able to tell that its up to temp also (as the two are connected to a certain degree).

It does depend on how quickly the oil would get up to pressure though I suppose......what is the oil pressure usually at on a run (after 20 mins or so) and how quickly does it get there?
