Well done that girl. I think everyone who can donate should do. We'd all expect the blood to be there to save us or our family, but not enough folk contribute. It took me 21 years to get my silver badge for 25 donations but I now give 3 times a year.

The bone marrow thing is another good idea, but I'm ashamed to admit I'm a bit scared to do that one - I think bone marrow donation hurts. Does anyone know?

Get in touch with the link I posted above and they will tell you exactly whats involved when donating bone marrow

Dont get me wrong donating your own bone marrow is nothing like giving a pint of blood , you will be quite poorly afterwards but if I have to suffer a little just to save someones life then I do it willingly


Also the way I look at it is this .......

Im 17 at the mo, but when im 18 i will definately give blood, it doesnt take much and could save someones life. that must be a good feeling knowing that u could help someone by giving blood.

Stevo - I have to admit that if I was told that one of my donations was being given to a specified rapist/murderer/whatever else I don't agree with, I don't suppose I would turn up. Sadly/happily we don't get that information so don't have to decide who to save and not to save, that power would be a terrible burden. Instead, we donate to help others, and that would include you if you ever needed it.

Maybe there is a case to say that only donors can get transfusions, or people with organ donor cards can get transplants?

PeteH - the blood transfusion service is part of the NHS so don't charge them for the blood - any transfer is just moving numbers from one page to another as the cash still stays in teh NHS. What they don't use can be sold to the private hospitals, but that cash also helps the NHS.

Georgie, you can give at 17 with parental consent. Certainly the case in Scotland, don't know if Engerlandshire is different.

but the national blood service has to pay people to take the blood, plus they have to pay to hire out the church halls, all the research and equipment and transport etc... its expensive, so its not as if they are there to make profit on it... hard to beleive but some organisations are good and honest and not trying to make a quick buck... hehe

i must admit that i hadnt thought about giving blood... but since my boyfriend died it made me think.. he didnt need blood, but as most people have said, i would want my loved ones to have the opportunity to receive blood god forbid theyd ever need it, and without donations its not possible.. ur blood only lasts for up to 3/5 days depending on the components, so it relies on regular donations from people all over the country...
