You have to update it BEFORE you connect to the internet.

It's best to make windows install CD with most up to date patches. Then you install antivirus software, then you connect to internet through a firewall of some kind. And it's going to be all right then.

If you connect fresh windows to broadband it will die in couple of minutes from trojans and similar stuff.

Could well be in the BIOS. Maybe a good reason it was second hand like it is corrupt. Had one of our work PC's with some nasties in the BIOS and ended up sending it back to our Antivirus software manufacturer. Try a different hard drive in the first instance and I would get some other antivirus software as well.

Ps Try the IT forum in here as well or try specialist ones online for more suggestions

had a similar problem 2 weeks ago in the fact google would not work. So through mcafee i did the following

go here and download hijack this
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

then join this forum
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?act=idx

when you run hijack this, you create a log of your pc okay. Post it on the forum and within an hour an engineer will check it out and tell you what to delete.

Hope this helpss, as they were brilliant with me.

Go to Cyber Tech Help Forum and go to Cyber Safety, post your problem and one of the tech helpers will assign themelves to your problem. They were fantastic with me when I experienced multiple viruses/trojans etc. They are experienced in reading the HJT logs.

There is a procedure for creating up to date installation CD descibed in knowlege baseoon Microsoft.com. It isn't that hard but I always got somebody to do it for me. For pro administrator it's couple of minutes work.

I'm very happy with AVG for some time. But there isn't antiviral software that will help for every virus ralated problem. It's kind of last barier against them, good firewall and network setup is the most important thing.
