Hi all, just sussed one of my MX5's rear calipers has seized so have got another ready...put some scrapyard-fresh Mondeo calipers on my Escort earlier on this year though and one of them seized, although I definitely checked the pistons moved before fitting.
What do you reckon are the chances of pulling the piston out of the 2nd-hand caliper I got, cleaning up the bore with very fine emery/polish, then re-inserting the piston without damaging the seal? I'd just get a service kit but they're about 5 times more £££

It really is luck of the draw whether the seal would be ok after removing it.

I wouldn’t waste your time stripping the calliper just to refit old parts, had a check on eBay and a rebuild kit costs between £20-£30 depending on the year of Mondeo and wether it’s the front or rear, that’s peanuts tbh.

if its siezed then getting the piston out will be difficult. cleaning the caliper bore is fine but most likely the piston will be rusty too and even if you clean it the rusty part will sooner or later be running on the seal so realistically you need a new piston and seal

Thanks chaps it's the mx5 caliper that's the problem at mo...I put another scrappy mondeo caliper on the escort & it's working fine for now but I'll service the seized one ready to swap back in the future if need be
Can't even find the kit for the mx5 now, its a mk2.5 s-vt rear & the Haynes gives full instructions for servicing the fronts but not the rears! Too complicated they say don't even bother. So prob just fit the 2nd hand one for now, hope for the best & look into getting the old one serviced somewhere cos sounds too tricky for me
Cheers
