Having a car run in on dyno .
Anyone else had a new engine build run in on a dyno once fitted to the car ? ..im thinking of getting everything all in and then taking it up to my tuners for running in and mapping .

Ran in for an hour doing a simulation on the rollers to load and unload the motor.
Then did another oil & filter change with quality oil then on with mapping as usual.
It is a bit of personal preference though. I prefer the hard break in method.
Some people prefer a much longer run in break in period.

Mine will be run in as above. A good hour on the dyno with millers running in oil. Then changed for high end oil and kick it’s head in!

Run it in hard
We did mine on road and did as my mapper requested

Does one simply remove the odometer or any part to remove adding on mileage to the car during these running in on the rollers?
As mentioned above a 3 hour run on the rollers could potentially add 200 miles onto the car. Its not like the car has done any 'miles'.

On the road is ok but 3rd gear plus pulls can start getting silly
Dyno is much safer for everyone/ everything

On a 400+ bhp car running it in and doing it on the road I was advised to not rev over 3000rpm and not load the engine on hills etc but it still relates to 90+mph which is a bit quicker than driving miss daisy A few long drives and it was soon run in!
The modern way of getting your tuner to run it in will suit a lot of people better without a doubt.

When my air cooled 911 was blue printed the builder said to drive with wide open throttle and big loading but not to rev over 4000 rpm...don't know if that is just air cooled but doubt it as ultimately all cars are air cooled one way or another.

The AMG factory is lit from power generated by the hand built engines being run in on the dyno....I love that concept.

Hi Glenn, its also loud and scary when your car is on the rollers!! I had to go outside as I was thinking "hope to fuck it stays in one bit". Relief when its finally finished and then the buzz of the drive home with all the extra power!!!!

Its a good way to do it really as many things can be monitored, just the cost side of things i guess puts many off as paying per hour on the dyno is expensive compared to just sitting in the car up the road.
Ive got a few ready to come for running in and shakedown when mine is ready to use.

I guess you can only take the advise of the person you use I use one of the best mappers in the business. I think there basically set up on a dyno but fully mapped on the road/somewhere suitable if possible

Saying engine is running isn't something you can use as an excuse as engines run without moving.

I guess if you own a car that is really just an expensive toy and never gets driven then 200 extra miles are important!!! Why bother having it if you are so worried about a few hundred extra miles going on it.Sorry I just dont get it!! Cars are to be driven and enjoyed IMO.

My escort is low mileage but I will not be unplugging the odometer ..as the car is still doing the mileage on a set of rollers just the same as it does on the road .

You're not making sense ..no where have i said a dyno is better than open road mapping ..my tuner stopped doing open road mapping and now does dyno mapping on one of the best dynos if not the best in the UK I never said it was better than open road mapping .

I'm not entirely sure what Stu does mapping wise these days as things have changed since I last used him ..but people have said running in is mineral oil for circa 100 miles ..dropped and some proper oil in and boost .
