14000+ post superhero
lets face it as a car theyre crap, they were crap in their day and rose tinted specs don't make them any better
but as a low mileage original collectors item and money making bargain its a great find. id do no more than getting it running reliably and cleaning it up a bit then look to see about getting it valued via an owners/enthusiasts club that theres bound to be for them. such a low mileage original examples bound to fetch several times what you've paid for it.
a quick ebay search shows a similar 45000 miler up for Ł3500.

Make sure the dash pot on top of the carb is filled with oil as that'll cause a lot of running problems. It just unscrews (black cap) on top of carb and is a piston/plunger on a rod, make sure that's filled up with oil otherwise it won't run properly if at all

I had a silver mg metro, I thought the red seat belts are carpets were sooo cool lol, I killed it trying to do a burnout in front of my mates, reversed back, first gear, clutch and revs up then a bang so loud half the neighbours came out

To be honest mate it's been so long since I worked on one I can't 100% remember correctly but I defo used to use 10w40 or 15w40 (whatever we had in the workshop) and used to fill it up most of the way to the top and push the plunger back in and then if there was too much it would just come out the sides and never caused a prob.

So the new fuel pump arrived today! On it went and started straight up, it seems like it has a bit of a misfire so I will check the leads dizzy etc tomorrow and may well order some new vac hoses and see if that solves it,
Iv also rubbed down some surface rust on the front ready to prep and repaint.
Does anyone know where to find the paint code for the metal bumpers? I can find the main paint just not the bumpers

Few updates on the car, iv decided to keep it off the road now this winter and sort out the few issues it has. I intend on keeping it as original as possible so don't want to swap panels for no reason but iv had to sort a new valance for it, I found a mint front end at a breakers so cut the front off and will use part repair panels as shown in the pics.
First up I cut the rot from the drivers wing
I then cut a repair panel and welded it in place
I then removed the front panel and found a small repair under the drivers headlight is required and a small repair to the crossmember also, the crossmember was done then hammerite was added for protection, it will be all wax oiled when its done also.
I have also patched the headlight surround now with a repair section but no pics of that yet

Rescuing it too.
Worth checking where the subframe meets the body in the rear wheel arch (sort of where the back seats are) as they can rot there.

They are great for todays roads...they have more power than grip (and not a lot of power) and you can play around with lift off oversteer, understeer and 4 wheel drfits all at a speed lower than the speed limit.

Thanks for all the positive comments, as you can see I'm ending up giving it a minor resto, wings off etc, I will check all areas for corrosion, it's only ever had one patch in the past and I'm not happy with it so will cut out and re do it. I'm not using full panels because it doesn't really need it and I want to keep as original as possible

Just to add a couple of pics of the headlight repair section, I bought a complete cut off front end so all the parts are genuine perfect fit. I need to flap disc some of the welds and stone chip so it looks original but there is very little rust I would just prefer to cut out anything so it lasts another 30 years, the purple crap is rust remover just in case
Next I need to remove the passenger wing to check behind it and I need to source a wing also to replace my bottom section.
It's possibly on hold for a while now because our new kitchen was delivered and needs fitting

Well done on saving it, I used to hate them as a apprentice but I enjoy seeing them now!
Is it still on 160/65/315 tyres? Last time I looked at work we couldn't get them anymore.

So i have been back on it again! Needed a passenger wing in the end and minor repairs behind the wing but other than block sanding the wings and valance, and a small amount of filler on the drivers sill it’s almost ready for paint,
I’m not looking forward to the paint match with it being red but I will see how it goes.

No major updates on the car but I feel in somewhat of a dilemma. My intentions were always to keep the car as original as possible but for the first time in ages I called into a local car meet and a mate of mine took me for a quick spin in a rover metro with a lotus Elise in-line in it and f..k me that was quick! So quick that someone else took it out and a rather nice Porsche ended up in the pub car park to see what was under the bonnet because he got shit all over off the lights.
So as you can imagine my dilemma is do I stay standard or do I go k series?

Better engine but standard exterior...that would be great.

Keep it original, not going to be many around now espically in good condition, lots of history & low mileage.
If you want to build an pocket rocket sleeper, buy another one.

I get get your point but I don’t need two,
i think I need to get it on the road and I am on the look out for a 160 tf if one comes up cheap,
i do need to do more research into how the k series mounts in the Austin because I don’t want to cut it up

How about an Avonbar 1380 big bore, head work and decent cams? 100+ bhp is not hard. The David Vizard book, "tuning the a series" is old but well worth a ready.

Well, I have been back on the metro and decided to do a restoration series on it, I’m very new to YouTube so if you watch and have any hints or tips how I could improve please let me know,
more footage, less etc,
if your interested in the project please subscribe

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
If you want some inspiration with a ford twist I will leave this here
now turbo charged.
A really nice chap that gave me a few leads with my project.
Just imagine that behind your left ear in a metro ........... of course it makes sense
