Default Dmf failure time span.

So my daily driver is a Mondingo with the 2.0 Duratec petrol. It's just hit 65k and the dmf has just started to rattle.

Any body have any experience of how long they hang in for.

Do they just fail or do they get worse and worse ?

The insurance is up in about three weeks so it would be handy if I can get another 500 miles from it before I retire it. But I could do with out getting stranded on the A1 as well.

Cheers

From what I can gather it's a bit of a lottery. I've been told that sometimes they can fail completely and in a very short time, and sometimes they can go on for ages. Personally I've got them changed as soon as they start to go, just in case.

For 3 weeks I'd just use it mate and then scrap it/sell it after you've finished with it

I only bought it for the low miles Duratec but ended up using if for the last three years as it's so good at what it does.

I wouldn't sell it on as a car, I will pull the motor and roll it in.

My new car is 20 groups higher or somthing and I just know the insurance would take the piss changing it over.

Being a petrol car I'd like to think you'll be safe for a while yet, my mate had a dsg flywheel rattle and it's still rattling now 3 years on and countless amounts of abuse

What a shit idea this these are. Ive replaced a few with solid flywheels over the years and i have never noticed any difference between them.

Well I've just done 150 miles in it this morning with no problems. I will just go steady with it.

Even at 65k miles the car doesn't warrant the work needed. Engine is a peach though.

It'll last for ages mate. Less torque in a petrol which is what kills them. Will last a good couple of years I would of thought. Will get worse before it packs in.

As stated, a bit of a lottery. My 1.9 tdi polo did 85k and 4 years with a rattler. My wife's A4 managed 5k from new before the flywheel shit itself. For what's left on the ticket keep running it and make sure you got enough change in you pocket for the bus if it do go bang!
