starter problems?

escort 1997 1.6 zetec e
the solenoid is working but it wont spin so i checked the starter and found a thin blue wire that has snapped what is this wire

I suspect that is the "excite" wire that makes the motor start and draws the full power from the main lead. Might be worth very briefly running that to the battery and literally touch it for a nano second and see what it does......depending on what the other posters say.

Very much like Toby said I would take it off the car and use a set of jump leads and a small peace of wire to check it's working as it should

Won't be that, due to the fact the solenoid is being energised.

Therefore you need to check the connections are clean and tight.

That wire is usually for the alternator, but not at that location.
