Default £5k for a toy.. What do you buy?

Anything that's got 4 wheels with doors on it, purely just a toy.

What does £5k buy these days?

Suzuki jimny, throw on a lift kit,big wheels and tyres then go off-roading,most fun you will gave with your clothes on.
With the change buy a classic impreza but start saving for the inevitable engine rebuild.

I've always fancied a nice clean mk2 XR2. I've just sold a nice clean classic Impreza and you can still find good ones within budget and they are fun, practical and going up in value. The other car on my list around that budget is a Clio 182 Trophy.

^ Low mileage Clio Trophy is looking like a good investment at the moment. Prices going up steadily.

Invest in a classic, 80/90's car. E30 BMW or something like that. Have a bit of fun and it should increase in value. Just a thought as an alternative

Yes, I had a very tidy and well looked after IV years ago. Was low miles, within a year of selling it the crank walked on the owner that bought the car of me. To be fair he did keep it and fit an Evo VI engine in its place.

I was in the same boat a couple of months ago wanting something fun for the Mrs and myself. Looked at all sorts; Honda S2000, Porsche Boxsters, BMW 3 series cab, Audi A4 cab but always ended up back with the Audi TT roadster so ended up buying an 04 3.2 example. Not everyone's cup of tea but it fitted the box for what we wanted as a couple.

Motorbikes, for us, just aren't even on the radar.

Take it you couldn't get a good s2000 then for your budget? I'm not into that type of car but the s2000 is some bit of kit

I'd go for a Jap rally rep or a 325ti with a LSD, 3-litre engine and brakes ( all do-able for 5k )

Just didn't like the way it drove, seemed to have to wring its neck to make progress and it sounded daft when the revs were up.

Apparently so! I wasn't aware of that, I'll be sure to look out for one with a newer lump in it when the time comes.

I do like a nice e30, last time I looked, the 325i sport was £12k+ but I assume you can get a lesser model within budget?

I quite fancy an old 90s Merc E300 W124 , but then late 90s early 00s Mercs are silly cheep toys,

for example E55 AMGs , a german V8 with 350+HP £2700

Good suggestion, something a bit old skool that isn't classed as a classic just yet, could sell it on for the same price you paid for it, or maybe even a little more.

Love the Williams or even just a 16v Clio, how do they drive? I've had a R5 GTT and a Clio 182 so I'd e pest it to be somewhere in between..!
