Default Zafiras catching fire

Been reading about the possible recalls on these, just curious if anyone knew what parts are failing to cause the fires?
I've heard it's linked to the heater resister, presumably burning out?

That's bad seeing as they are often used for a school run in most cases.

i wouldn't worry too much. reading up on it, they want to replace all heating resistors, as they suspect that aftermarket ones may be causing the issue. they are offering to replace them all free of charge, so can't be bad.

I saw the thing on fb, I've got one that the Mrs carts the two kids and ten day old baby round in. Hated the car before all this, even more now!
Can't find anywhere that says what the actual cause of the fires is?

It seems the cars that caught fire had non oe/vauxhall heater motor resistors fitted.they wernt able to check all of the vehicles that have been reported to have caught fire due to some of the vehicles being that badly destroyed they couldnt salvage anything to check ect,
It seems at the moment to replace all resistors remove the pollen filters and check this and check the fan/motor and wiring loom.

This used to happen on mk1 mondeos, the wiring to the resistor would melt and short out. Don't think they caught fire though.

However if I was an old Ford and was reincarnated as a zafira I'd want to self destruct!

manual air con models only

but why recall 280,000 cars if a few owners are being cheap? let them burn and then the insurance won't pay out, simples

Reminds me of the fiesta my sister has, replaced
The heater control valve under the scuttle panel a couple of months back as her heaters weren't working, last week it caught fire and smoke was pouring out, luckily she turned the ignition off sharpish. Asked her to see the purchase thing on eBay where she had bought the part and it was from bloody China for less that a fiver. Wouldn't mind betting the same Chinese place makes these heater resistors. I think someone should do something about all this shite coming in from China with no quality control, there getting rich off us importing pure shite

Cheers mate! Lol
I own one, horrible crock of shit, fuck only knows why we thought buying one would be a good idea... It's like a tardis in reverse, looks quite big from the outside, but couldn't swing a cat inside.
On ours, the heater never gets hot, which, researching it seems to be a thermostat, or a valve or something, behind the dash? Just made me wonder if that was related to the things catching fire...
I remember the mondeos were common for it, but I recall it just stank the car out and you got full speed on any fan setting...

When I worked at Vauxhall for 7 years I cant say I have heard of any Zafira's in that time going on fire. From what I can gather the cars that have gone on fire are at the older end of the Zafira B production so there is a good chance that poor parts are used or pollen filters are not being replaced or even leaves are stuck in the motor assembly.
The heater resistors are currently on back order and the recall status is pending.

I recall some Corsa D's having a problem with the wires goi g to the heater resistor melting but I don't recall this happening on the Zafira B

A bloke who bought my old rs2000 van came in a zafir vxr. That was 5-6 years ago. He said he'd been through 2 turbo's and a gearbox and it wasn't that old. He said it was dogshit to own but when It worked went well

Yeah but that was mainly down to broken door looms and the tailgate was mostly the micro switch but in some cases the washer pump fuse as its shared on some versions.

They use the M32 gearbox so have similar issues to the 1.9 cdti. The turbos are a bit hit and miss. I have had a few in work with cracked manifolds also. But in fairness at the dealership I worked we never really seen a VXR Astra H or Zafira B come back a lot for warranty work compared to the equivalent CDTI versions.

The M32 box is apallingly bad. My mate is on his third and the dealer gave him the short shrift every time. Its only a crappy diesel model too with the 1.9 so hardly a big power car

And it may get worse for wanksall/Opel
Rumour that the Opel Zafira 1.6 CDTi has been tested and may have "VW-style cheating" software,

Seems it was tested on a 2wd rolling road but when it was on a 4wd RR it output alot high NOx.

Don't know how legit the source is though

Just seen this on watchdog, thankfully it sounds like no one has been seriously hurt or killed by it yet but it does feel like one thing after another with the motor industry right now..

I've sat through a few conference calls on this (I'm a service manager at a Vauxhall dealer) they're not recalling the cars.... only changing bits if customers make a call with concerns. They will put a stop to it I'm sure....but at the moment they haven't tested enough failed vehicles to be 100% that it's definitely the non oe resistors. Only tested 20 cars I think they said.

Its when people see a burnt out resistor and just lob a new one on without checking why it burnt out - normally knackered bearings in the fan motor. They then fit a cheap one on which is terrible.

Matt

There's a lot of manufacturers that have this...as the software and feature was designed by Bosch....not VW. So any manufactures that use Bosch ecus could be doing it.

I know it's naughty.....but damn clever.

You must be one of the few folk that buy a new car and actually look under the bonnet!

The amount of cars I get in to detail and I say 'oh it was pretty mucky under there' and go to show them the difference now to get met with a 'really, never looked under there before' type comment

anyone else see the watchdog update on this yesterday, vauxhall should hold their heads in shame as they still wont admit theres a issue and worried owners are being fobbed off with 2 week waits at dealerships just to have the cars checked and more have gone up in flames since last weeks show too, way to go vauxhall

It was in the paper today that the heater motor resistors are getting too hot and setting fire to the pollen filters.

Its in the paper so it must be true lol.
