Default groan when steering slowly

so my friend has a Toyota Avensis (Boooooo) haha.

They say when they steer slowly it makes a groaning sound, Im hoping it could be something as 'easy' as changing the power steering fluid, but am I just being naive? Could it be something more?

The colour of the fluid is usually a good indicator of it's condition. The groaning is normal being an avensis and all . I would check the gators for splits or signs of leakage.
