What's a fair hourly rate for a technician?
My son, working in a Mercedes Benz main dealership, 20 years old, been there since leaving school at 16, maybe two weeks off sick in the entire 4 years.
Been through the Mercedes Appreticeship scheme, passed all the exams, now just been offered a pay rise from £6.50 and hour to £8 an hour.
Was hoping for more as he's effectively doing a Technician's job, and having done his time as an apprentice, was looking forward to reaping some of the rewards.
Is that a fair rate of pay? I know working on the spanners isn't the greatest paid job in the world, but he could get more than that flipping burgers in MaccyD's!

Lads at are place go onto an improvers rate after there 3 years are up which is 8.50 an hour. Not sure how long there classed as improver for lol. But they do late shift every other week which is also an extra 2.29 an hour. (15.30-0.00)
Over there 3 years at collage they also get 3 grand to spend on tools as well. That's payed in 3 payments

I were on £2.33ph at 20 odd yrs old, went to £4.00, then £6.50 then would have been 25k+ bonus...and that were as a beater in a MD body shop.
Tbh mc'ds don't pay £8ph and if I were him id be chuffed he with a main franchise for now...
he could head off to one of the finer brands and get alot more...maybe.
I'm now a forensic cleaner mopping up the worst shit imaginable, voids, body parts, filth, drug dens.......
And guess what its basic is £7.50ph lol with some SERIOUS RISKS involved, with no shift patterns either, so id be hanging on if I were him as suddenly 8ph as a tec wont seem so bad a memory hahahaha
Good luck to him 😊

Tried to placate him by telling him that was a 23% pay rise (I got 2.5% in March), but he's still got the hump, maybe once he's slept on it, he'll feel a bit better about it.
Thney changed his tile from Apprentice Improver to Improver Technician, so at least it's heading the in right direction I suppose

PassionFord Post Whore!!
We hire in techs at around £10 an hour for perms And £12-14 an hour for contractors after they have done a full apprenticeship (3-5 years)
Seems main dealers don't pay market rate as they have people queuing to get in
You need to remind him that the business is investing in him and although it seems not a lot the decent techs will get looked after and promoted in time
I have one engineer here who did his apprenticeship at Vauxhall, it gave him a good back ground and at 24 he went to uni to do his degree, he's now a senior engineer on a very good salary. He's only 20 he has lots more to learn

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
you also have to remember he's only 20 so he's not really that experianced just trained and qualified. I'm sure as time goes by he will earn more money and get bonuses ect just tell his to stick with it.

When I started at Vauxhall when I was 23 I was on £7.50ph. When I finished I was on £10.20ph.
The young lads who started and worked there through their apprenticeship got just over minimum wage for their age. Once they done their level 3 it did go up a fair bit.
One of my mated worked from leaving school at a different ford dealer to me and when he was qualified they didn't pay him anywhere near what I was getting when I moved over to Vauxhall. He finished there and went over to a land rover dealer and got himself a huge pay rise and is now going through all the land rover training.
My advise would be to stay at merc a bit longer and get more experience there. Then he can have a look around to see who needs techs and what they are paying. A stable career history is ideal to get into other main dealers etc.

10K+ Poster!!
£8 per hour isn't too bad, you can earn more by qualifying yourself even higher! When I had a crack at an apprenticeship there was a master technician there who was on a good 3 times more than anyone else in the garage.
