My dad was a copper for 28 1/2 years. The pay isn't that good and you're a copper 24/7. Used to get abuse from the young scrotes when not at work too 
The good thing is tho' that he retired at 52 and he's got a really good pension
My fiance is a copper too
she's been in since september and the workload is incredible, and takes up most of her days off 
I worked it out to be about £6 an huor she's on!!! Not really worth it for what the job entails IMO.
But nevertheless a worthwhile career that could do with better pay
