how different are these two engines ie
crank,block,pistons.head etc
how does it make its power,is it only down to the vvt system?
would you buy a brand new crate 2.0 blacktop for a turbo conversion or had the 170 engine got better internals ?

The ST170 head and inlet is better. The ST170 exhaust manifold is better. the bottom end also differs.
The 170 uses VCT not vvt, variable cam timing, on one cam only, unlike vvt which is both cams. combined with the inlet and head design, allows for the increase in power.
If your building a zetec turbo, you can buy a brand new crate 2.0 and fit focus RS pistons and rods, or just go with aftermarket rods and pistons, which is the most advisable route to be honest.

block is similar but a little different.
rods and pistons are different
crank is the same
head totally different.,ports bigger,valves bigger,different cam buckets.
if your going turbo i would try this....buy rods, pistons and valve springs and a dta s60 ecu ,keep vvt then whatever turbo/manifold your gonna run.
