Default Focus RS mk2 rust issue

Well I've been to see two Focus Rs's in the past week and both have suffered from rust on the rear arches. First was a 59 reg and the second one in the video below was a 10 reg.

I'm disgusted Ford can even get away with it kind of thing, it just shouldn't happen.

When I've done some research on this issue it's saying you need full Ford service history and every time its in for a service it needs some sort of paint check with is £15 on top (which they don't tell you to get), if you don't have both them they won't fix it.

Hope you mk2 RS owners have checked your arches properly and don't have this problem but it's seems more common now.

Ridiculous... surely if it has a FSH and paint checks at Ford then that would be good enough. I didn't think manufacturers were allowed insist on dealer servicing for warranty claims providing that genuine parts had been used by a VAT registered garage.

I'd be trying to find a 'friend' inside Ford who could help with a paint check history.

Cheers,
Grant

Default fords

modern fords can rust very badly-i bought the missus a 58 plate ka with 19k on it 2/3 years ago-it was rusted right through at the filler cap within 12 months-no damage/repairs factory paint, the surround of the rear wiper was as bad, anywhere it had a stonechip was spidering badly with rust, never seen anything like it

They do sort it if you have them both FSH with Ford and paint check, but that's what I'm saying they don't mention to people to get the paint check. They should add it in with the service but it's there way of wriggling out of painting your car.
Audi don't require this, just as long as the cars got full Audi history and not been sprayed before your all good.

I've gave up looking for a Focus RS now, this rust issue is just going to get worse and worse

That's really bad crack that Tony. What happened? Did Ford fix it or tell you to jog on?

Paint work on all new fords since around 2003 has been terrible.
On my focus rs mk1 you could see how thin the paint was on the arch area, no wonder they are all rotten too. Very poor show indeed.

The dealers don't care what they are selling to be honest?

I worked at a skoda dealer and if any customer came in with a paint fault or rust showing skoda would send a man out to measure the paint to make sure it's not been painted before if not then they would fix the car no questions asked any car up to 12 years old.

We had quite a few octavia estates rear hatch that got replaced under warrenty I have even seen them replace chrome wheels which have started to peel on a 10 year old car all for free.

My last s3 has slight rust on the bottom of the door, they came out with the paint gauge thing and messured the thickness on a few parts of the car then told me it had different depths so they couldn't fix it.

I had mine done on my old Mk1 Focus in about 2005. Back then the car had to be still in warranty. mine was on the bottom of the rear doors & boot, both there the 2 skins of the door were sealed.

Dad had rust on his Mk1.5 around the Ghia chrome plastic boot handle.

That's shocking! They shouldn't have any rust for a good 10 years, totally unacceptable IMO.

I thought ford had sorted this issue, it does vary car to car, my RS is a 2003 and the very inside of the rear arch is a little bubbly (never been repaired) and one door has a small amount at bottom where paint has been removed and is flaking slightly, my mums is a 2004 focus tdci and all arches are spotless and there's no rust anywhere on the car

Mercedes had exactly this issue about 10 years ago or so. Iirc it was a paint issue, the leading edge of the front arches, door bottoms, boot edges would scab etc....

Not the first time I've heard of the OPs problem with ford though.

Really? I've been looking at e46 bm's lately at it seems most have scabby areas now, and dont even get started on merc stuff from a few years ago! They were supposed to be quality cars but corroded like an old mk4 escort.

Admittedly an e46 is older than a 10 plate focus but still not that old. My is200 is 12 years old and is spotless everywhere

Assume the focus problem only affects the rs cars as I don't think ive ever seen rust on a normal mk2? Either way its totally shit, shame on you ford!

I've also seen a few golfs with that issue. Generally on the front arches tho. Weird that it only seems to happed on the later mk5's?

I reckon that the manufacturer who generally makes the cars with the best corrosion resistance is peugeot. See hardly any with rust even when they are 20 years old?

Volvo's generally seem good too

My 20 year old 205 only had very very slight surface rust on seams, mostly behind the lights. Only other spots were damage from the previous owner. If it had been better cared for cosmetically before I had it, it wouldn't have had the slight rust it had. Generally it was a solid car and even components faired well.

Unfortunately our climate doesn't help especially the salt used in winter. I looked at a fiesta st about 6 years ago was about12 months old I think and when I opened the door it was rusty near the window.

My mate who mots cars said that some of the newer peugeots end up with rusty sills but you cant tell cause there is that much stone chip on them it looks like the sill is in on piece.

Last time I was in Ibiza I seen a mk2 fiesta and it was mint. Not a spot of rust on it. I even took a few pics of it cause it was that good.

my daily 406 hdi looked mint on the sills but as soon as you touched it it was soft all the way, had to make the sills up as they don't do them, but to look at them they looked mint, wasn't even a chip in the stone chip at all.

Doesn't matter how old it is if the metal was not protected properly.
New cars are just not built the same way, thin metal, thin paint, poor quality doesn't matter if it says RS or not, it's still the same cheap process just the RS extras bump the money up.
Wouldn't touch one unless it was free

I had both of mine off recently and it was fine so you might be ok!

Thats on a 13 year old focus. Apart from some light scabbing on the rear arches the car is clean even after 222k miles.

New age painting methods is prob to blame for most of whats being mentioned in this thread. Its just not as durable as the older stuff

Lol @ rust on German cars
At the end of the day it's still a Ford, no matter what the price tag is, I don't see why people are so shocked by it, I wouldn't say it's anything new. The fact it has an RS badge doesn't make it automatically immune to rust.
Wise current owners should definitely get this checked out by a dealer, sack paying for fixing that to a decent standard.

Range rovers are the worst for rust, rear arches and tailgates especially
