Default How were XR2s/XR3is regarded in the 90s?

Inspired by the similar Cosworth thread. The MK2 XR2 is a car I always used to look out for when I was a kid, because my mum had a black one between 1994-1995, (I was born in 1993). I remember I used to see a fair few between 1998-2000, and always got excited whenever we passed one. So would like to know what the scene was like for these in those years. Also interested to hear any stories on MK4 XR3is.
Thanks.

On Saturday I went to work on the morning. I was going to my mams to replace the valve stem oil seals but I thought it would be a good idea to go back to my flat after work and smoke a bit of weed. A bit stoned (yeh I know its wrong it was over 15 years ago) I set off to go to my mams to fit the valve stem oil seals. I came to a set of traffic lights and a peugeot 106 came next to me. Well I bet the pug off the line went from 1st gear to 2nd. I red lined the engine and blew it up l0l.

So instead of changing the vsos I ended up doing an engine rebuild.

I coasted the car to a street at and got out the car. All I could see was oil and coolent running down the road lol.

I rebuilt the engine and it was a bloody flying machine.

Both had to rebuild our engines then lol. I tried to do a 0-60 on a country road once and the engine sounded like it was crying long before it was at the redline, talking 4500RPM. I didn't dare redline it lol.
That XR3i sure did look nice Glenn, very clean bodywork. RS Turbo alloys as well I see.

I crashed the black XR3i at a set of traffic lights on a round about. There was a car infront which when the traffic lights turned to amber it went so I was looking at the traffic lights then when I looked at the road the car infront had decided it was gonna stop.

I hate the back of the car. Smashed a headlight bent the bonnet amd slam panel. Cracked the front bumper and popped the radiator. I replaced the panels and rad then I bought a white XR3i for 300 quid cause it needed a drivers front door window.

Ever since that day I was always scared to rev an engine. Yeh it was a clean car and I got the S2 alloys cheap too.

when I first bought pic the XR3 up from the garage I bought it the battery was flat. The bloke jump started it. I went for a drive for about 45mins then the car cut out and wouldnt start. I got a jump start and away I went for another 45mins.

It cut out again. I got the car home charged the battery then the next day I drove to work and ordered a battery. I fitted this and went for a cruise about on the night. That lasted 2 hours lol. Car cut out.

Next day I fitted an alternator cause the voltage would drop to 7 volts then 6 and the car would cut out.

Went for a drive. Car cut out again. Fitted a starter motor for some reason lol.

In thr end there was a small corroded wire on the battery. Fixed this and the car was mint lol

The vauxhall novas, cavaliers and astras were the best. Remove the hazard switch plug it back in upside down, snap the steering lock jump start the car and there you go.

I used to buy the old px motors off my mates uncles garage mk1/2's for Ł20 and drive them till they died when I was 16
My 1st xr3i I swapped for a 1275GT mini but turned out to be a ringer...
Then found a modified fiesta supersport with a xr2 engine on a 1.3 box pull away was very good but no top end
Made my way through few sierras too 2 x xr4i's 2.3 ghia 20i sapphire.
But as already said mostly driven by the local criminals a complete a older guys had Rs turbos and 3dr cossies but they had jobs lol
Seemed the older ones where always yobo's who drove them or normal people driving the newer ones, apart from a 3dr that a few of my shady friends nicked and kemp for joy ridding round town,
After a couple of days they had ground off most of the tail pipe and petrol tank due to kicking its arse inlow gears for hours on end lol
Do miss my old supersport though
