Default What's everyone's favourite engine?

Just wondering what engine everyone thinks is the best ever?

I was just reading up on the 2JZ engine in the Supra, loads of posts about it being able to take 800+ bhp on a standard bottom end. Just made me think that it is an awesome engine and one of the best ever built. The 2.6 skyline is a cracker as well, just wondering what other peoples opinions are on the best engines ever made are?

Cosworth DFV, kicked the shit out of everything in F1. And a BDA just cant be beaten when it comes to noise, and being as this is passionford the YB has to be mentioned, was awesome in group A touring car spec (I'm sure Mr RS500 could fill you in on details), the 1.6 vtec that was in the ek9 civic type r is impressive too, it was well over 100bhp per litre, something unheard of in a production hatchback.

Not the best engine ever built but the YB has got to be a good one. They still use them now in racing so they cant be that bad.

I do love a sound of an American V8.

Out of all the cars I have actually owned i think my favourite engine is probably the vauxhall xe red top.

For a n/a 2.0 they are powerful, produce plenty of torque, efficient and appear to be pretty much indestructible.

Can cover mega milages easily too

The yb is good as all the components used in it as standard are top draw enabling high boost levels and power figures to be obtained relatively easily compared to almost anything comparable from that era.

They always seem to make good torque too which is what matters really when you want a car that accelerates quickly.

Agree that you can't beat the sound of a v8!

e60 m5 engines are pretty awesome.

The Honda b16a is a cracking engine aswell. 1.6 n/a 150bhp and mega reliable back in 1990. Ford couldn't achieve that power with a turbo on a 1.6 and they weren't even reliable.

B16/18's are fantastic engines, can be boosted to crazy levels too but lose the appeal of VTEC IMHO.

The 2.3 T5 engine is a cracking engine too, will do moon miles without a sweat and can push impressive numbers. Not to mention the sound of a 5 cylinder

42 litres 1500bhp the incredible Parkard Bentley they dont create cars like this now. Can you imagine it with those thin tyres having around 4000ft-lb of Torque to cope with .

For sheer noise and performance, best bang for buck and it was king of the hills....has to be the Audi 2.2 20V Turbo ABY!!! Nothing in my opinion comes close!!

How much torque?:shocke d:

You could pull a house down with that!

Millington is a good shout, makes a mk2 out accelerate a WRC car on tarmac.

The BDT in an rs200 takes a bit of beating, imagine that in the mid 80's!

AJP V8

The VVC system in the K-Series gets a nod too for the ingenuity though it needs a different crank to work anything like it should

I agree, my vote goes with the 5-pot Audi, always loved the sound of it. Though I don't agree they were king of the hills, they only won against 2WD cars
