Default Price of second hand cars!

We'll to cut a long story short, my daily driver put up a miserable show for the MOT. Instead of wasting money on parts and my time I decided to have a look for a cheap second hand car, has anyone else noticed how much people want for absolute piles of crud?

Luckily I found a BMW compact with 12 months MOT and 6 months tax for £295!

The woman wondered why she had over 30 calls in one day for it!

Anyone else had an absolute bargain lately?

Its not bad its more of a top end car really, its not quick off the mark, and its got a flatspot at 2000 ish revs but once it gets up to 4000 revs the IMRC suprisingly works and it proper flys, sounds immense too with the stainless and filter on it.

Just sold my ST170 for £450

Needed a few bits doing to it (clutch and flywheel, timing belt, heater blower motor and a couple of wheel bearings) and by the time I'd spent time and money doing those bits, I would've struggled to get £1k for it I reckon so just bit the bullet.

I just bought an Audi A3, 2003 1.8 SE, 96k, 12 months MOT, 6 months tax, £1500. Thought that was ok, I know you can get these cheap but it's so straight, I expected dents and bad paint repairs etc but the body is hardly marked and it's straight as an arrow. Smart little car for £1500!

I always thought they were meant to be a good car. Seems people think differently. Wouldn't mind having one so I could steal the engine for my mk4 lol

most new cars now fall foul of those "emissions" things, so when you are paying what the cars worth in tax every year, it sort of makes you wonder how long they will last for

They wont last long dojj, but then thats how the manufacturers and government want it.

Such cars will be worthless.

Also all the complex electronics, once that starts to go wrong its scrap yard time.

I do reckon the starter motor business will be booming in a few years with all this start stop engine nonsense.

Just got a 54 plate grand espace 2.2dci for £250 they spent £5000 on it between 2011 and 2013 including a recon engine. They gave up on it when a driveshaft went and it was laid up for a year. New battery and mot and a driveshaft and she's mint £2000 car all day long

i give 300 for my mg zs+ in feb. done 145k but is real clean with full rover history, only need it till end of july when mot runs out and i'm certainly getting my 300 quids worth out of it. cheap cars are few and far between these days everyone wants top dollar for scrap suppose we have the scrapage scheme to thank for that

i was mincing about on facebook t'other day and theres a group on there called cars for sale under £500, some very good bargains on there. Found another good source is gumtree, just set max price at what you want to pay, no distance and see what comes up, often people desperate to sell stuff with very little wrong with it.
I'm well happy with my £550 mondeo td, mk1, no rust, just flew mot after changing an ORIGINAL back box and front anti roll bar bushes. Does Aberdeen to Swansea on a full tank and a bit left to run about in, starts first time, everytime, handles well and goes ok too. I was given a V6 estate mk1 mondeo years ago with an apparent siezed engine, wouldn't turn over. Turned out the aircon pump had siezed, cut the belt, put a non aircon belt on, battery and way to go. Needed a spring for the mot. Awesome car, went well, but a tad thirsty.
Theres loads of cheapies out there if you stay mainstream, biggish cars.

the scrappage scheme was a great big con as it got rid of all the cars that would have fallen just before the tax change over date

been looking at getting a new car if the fiesta dies a death come mot time yet the first thing i'll be looking for is the tax bracket, then the mpg before looking at a price or crash worthiness or the size etc ideally it'll be something vag like a polo diseasal but if something goes wrong i won't be bale to fix it with a spanner so when does it become a pointless exercise?

Some years ago the scrap pricese of mettle went through the roof. I believe they have come back down again now, but people that have seen old motor high in price because of this think that their old cars are still worth lots but without any mot they are just scrap and that is not lots now. Yes there are still some good cars about at the right prices. Cheers, Pete

Back in the old days when we used to be able to buy an old banger for £20 or so drive it till it stopped we would. The value of scrap back then was only about £3 per ton so never used to make any or scrap many either as the mots back then were so easy to pass.
Cheers Pete
