Default Important Info re the safety of YOUR YB

When looking at engine builds or upping bhp on current engine always use a fuel pump that has extra capacity than you need.I read so many posts on here regarding what pump should you use...its simple use a 044 grp a for stage 3 320bhp to 600bhp.The reason being that a car thats used for say track days or long thrashes will heat the fuel pump up and you can loose around 30litres/hr pressure...and running close to the edge ie speccing it with not enuff reserve can end in melt down.

Remember the std Cossie came with a pump cabable of flowing around 380bhp flat out......so whatever happened the pump would never loose enuff pressure to melt the engine.

If you want some serious pumps, get a Weldon, do single pumps good for upto 2500bhp

have to agree with IMA here, when i had my car initially mapped, my tuner thought i had a huge problem with something as he said i should be well into the 400ponies with my set up, then when he asked when was the last time i had changed my fuel filter, i said never, then said what about when you uprated your fuel pump??? i said i hadn't , he laughed and then told me he would leave the car at 375hp and to go back when i sorted my pump and filter out as it was maxing out at that

Lloyd as far as i know running 2 pumps which combined will supply enough fuel for your engine isn't a good idea! If one pump fails then the engine will still run but without the required amount of fuel and will no doubt melt the motor! 2 pumps both providing enough fuel each is a good idea as if onne fails the other will still supply the required amount of fuel for the engine.

Do you need to run bigger wires and a heavy duty relay with a Group A pump?

I`m going to get some walbro 255l high pressure pumps, and fitting one to my car.

I want to run an anti surge tank supplied with 3 vectra fuel pumps, then use a walbro pump to supply the fuel to the engine.

The plan i have is to pressurise the swirl tank to 5 - 20 psi.
Thant way the pump will have less pressure differential to operate to supply the fuel to the engine.

The reason being that a car thats used for say track days or long thrashes will heat the fuel pump up
What about uprated Esc cos pumps that sit in the tank do these over heat as well?
fuel pumps are cooled by the flow of fuel through them (and around them in the case of submerged pumps like escos). the higher capacity pump that you have, the more fuel flows through it keeping it cool. however, in this process the fuel is obviously heated up as heat exchange takes place. the engine is using a certain amount of fuel depending on speed and load, and any supplied to the rail that is not used is returned to the tank. if you have a pump that is over capacity, the more fuel is returned to the tank, so the contents of the tank gradually heats up meaning the fuel pump cannot be cooled as much, it's temperature rises and so does the fuel and so on.

the problem is then that hot fuel is less dense than cold fuel, so the same injector duration will flow less fuel mass at higher temperatures, which could result in lean mixtures and meltdown problems. after all, we need to match the mass of fuel with the mass of air (oxygen), not the volume.

so having a massive fuel pump is not necessarily a good thing.

if you have one that flows just over enough for a massive power on boost engine, it will be flowing way too much for low speed low load conditions and all that you will do is heat the fuel.

2 solutions:

1) do as rolls royce and bentley use to do (and maybe still do, i haven't looked for a while) and fit fuel coolers in the suction line of the air conditioning.

2) have 2 fuel pumps. 1 for low load conditions and a 2nd triggered much like water injection on boost, rpm, throttle position or whatever. that way you have enough fuel flow for high load, but not too much at low load to cause excessive heating of the fuel.

this becomes more of a problem the bigger the difference is between low load and high load fuel mass flow requirements. i.e. more of a problem on a t4 cossie running 2 bar boost than a t3 running 1 bar.

not as easy as you first thought is it?
