when I pulled away last night a bit briskly,i noticed a line of black soot on the ground have I got anything to worry about? (got a 1.8 diswell)

If it's driven sensibly, soot builds up in the exhaust, turbo etc. by pulling away briskly your forcing the soot out. Nothing to worry about. If anything I would nail it more often to stop the deposits of soot building up.
